Cooking Dutch! Cooking Dutch What does that mean? Cooking Dutch was formed by a group of women who have moved from America to The Netherlands (Holland). There are obviously lots of adjustments that an ex-patriate needs to make when moving to a new country. This group of women found that learning how to cook, and learning what foods, herbs, and baking supplies are available in The Netherlands was one of the biggest adjustments. This group shares recipes, cooking and baking hints, in addition to sharing our daily frustrations and happy discoveries while adjusting to our new life in a new country. Our membership now includes men and women from both The Netherlands and America. You do not need to be a member of Cooking Dutch to access

Ross Conlin
I nstructs: Advanced Dutch Cooking.
Guest Chef for Beginning Dutch Oven Cooking

When it comes to Dutch oven cooking, Ross Conlin is something of an institution in Southeast Idaho. He owns his own Dutch oven catering business, has been competing in Dutch oven cookoffs since 1984, and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the International Dutch Oven Cooking Society since 1990, serving as their president from 1994 to 1998. He also teaches the Outdoor Program's Advanced Dutch Oven class and is a guest chef in the beginner class. He brings to Dutch oven cooking the same sort of joie de vivre that he brings to other aspects of his life. He and his wife, Angie are a supportive and formidable team. In the late 1960s when Ross met Angie, a bubbly, cheery farm girl from Weston, Idaho, he knew right away that she was the one. Her hopeful optimistic attitude "was the way I always felt," said Ross, and not longer afterward they were married. Ross is an Idaho native, raised in Preston in the agrarian southeastern part of the state. His dad who worked at a meat packing plant first introduced Ross to Dutch oven cooking on a camping trip to Cub River Canyon east of Preston. Even before that first cast iron experience, Ross had taken a liking to cooking. At a very early age, his mother had instructed him in cooking basics. Baking particularly fascinated the youngster. "It was my first love," said Ross, and to this day, his favorite dishes in a Dutch all revolve around baking.

Pennsylvania dutch cooking is a culinary delight. Try these recipes for ShooflyPie and Schnitz un Knepp and a bit of history. Pennsylvania dutch cooking.

Pennsylvania dutch cooking
For any traveler fortunate enough to be passing through, or stopping in Lancaster Country, Pennsylvania, the culinary experience will be delightful. From a main course of Schnitz un Knepp to a dessert of Shoofly Pie, it will be a meal not soon forgotten. bodyOffer(16931) The folks that originally started populating this area in the 1680s were Mennonites, Seventh Day Baptists, Moravians, Amish, and a few other groups. They were soon joined by Reformed and Lutherans. These Germanic groups brought with them the recipe secrets that make Pennsylvania Dutch cooking so well-known. The term “PA Dutch” is not an accurate one since these groups are not from Holland. They are Germanic in heritage. There are a few theories about how this came about. One of those theories is that the German way to say “German” is “Deutsch.” If these people referred to themselves as “Pennsylvania Deutsch,” what he meant was Pennsylvania German. It is easy to see how it would eventually start sounding like the word “dutch.” Another possibility is that nearly all German immigrants arriving in Pennsylvania came from ports in places like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, both being in Holland.

... Home Dutch oven cooking is back!
A few years ago this wonderful way of outdoor cooking had almost died out, but thanks to a few devotees who keep it alive, it now flourishes.
Why is it such a great way of cooking? Because you can make anything in a dutch! Scrumptious roast meats, delightful vegetarian dishes, delectable hors d'oeuvre, aromatic breads and sinful deserts.
Dutch ovens are perfect for any type of outdoor activity. But you don't have to go on an outdoor trip to enjoy dutch oven cooking. You can cook right in your own backyard. Instead of barbecuing, do it in a dutch! Fire up the briquettes and start cooking away. Your guests will beg to be invited back Each year for the last 15 years, we've been holding a dutch oven cook-off. It's on the last day of a dutch oven class that we teach, and everyone cooks up their best dish. We'd like to share with you a few of the winning recipes. (If you're interested in more, see our publications page and an inexpensive cookbook that we have available).
