Why should meteorologists have all the fun? Go online with our very own Event-Based science expert, and weather-wise, Frank Weisel to design your own weather station, using instruments you build yourself! Visit the Event-Based Science Bulletin Board to collaborate on one of the projects, discuss designs, ask questions and “talk about the weather.” Weather in a Box

A television production company is filming a segment about severe weather for a kids’ show. They have hired you and your team to build a three-dimensional working model showing how weather fronts move. Since water and air are both fluids and flow in similar ways, you plan to use water for the demonstration... Tracking a Hurricane
(From “Hurricane!” an Event-Based Science Module by Russell G. Wright)
You are responsible for issuing hurricane watches and warnings for Charleston, South Carolina. You have been tracking an approaching storm for the past seven days. Since this storm could threaten Charleston, you’ll need to rely on your data analysis skills to plot its path on a hurricane tracking map...
Tracking Time
Track either a typhoon in the Pacific or a hurricane in the Atlantic. Where did it originate? What was its path, maximum wind speed, size of the eye, maximum rain fall, variation from predicted tides, landfall time and date, and monetary losses to people and property?

Eyes on Planet Earth:
Monitoring our Changing World
Geoscientists are observing and measuring the Earth every day. From the use of GPS to measure plate motions, to observing indicators of climate change, geoscientists constantly evaluate the Earth's present state and making predictions about how it will change in the future. What happened in 2002?

What is Earth Science Week?
Earth Science Week, the second full week in October, is an annual celebration of the contribution geoscience makes to society. The resolution to establish Earth Science Week was initiated by the Association of American State Geologists and was read into the Congressional Record in July 1998 by Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon. Read the message from President Clinton (2000) encouraging all Americans to participate in Earth Science Week activities. The promotion of Earth Science Week is one of the 50th anniversary initiatives of the American Geological Institute (AGI), of which GSA is a member. GSA urges each of you to set aside at least one day during Earth Science Week to reach out to your community and promote the creation of a conscientious society committed to the responsible use of Earth and its resources.

Impact Formal and Informal Education Encourage Others to Participate There are many opportunities to get involved with your community via formal and informal education during Earth Science Week. No matter what you select, we encourage you to involve both educators and scientists in your Earth Science Week project. Bringing together science knowledge with teaching skills is the best way to ensure the success of your project. Scientist partners can be found in universities, geoscience consulting companies, and state and federal agencies (such as state and federal geological surveys). Educators can be accessed through district or state science supervisors, local schools, museums, and science centers. Note: This is also your opportunity to provide other educators and scientists with the opportunity to help create a discriminating, educated society committed to the responsible use of Earth and its resources. Consider asking your colleagues who are not currently involved in outreach activities to assist you with your project. Key S Activities that geoscientists generally have the resources/ability to initiate.

Woods Hole Field Center Earth Science Week Activities
November 1999 in this issue: previous story next story In honor of Earth Science Week and the Cape Cod Pathways Walking Weekend Project, Beth Schwarzman , Outreach Coordinator, led a geology walk around Long Pond in Falmouth. The walk concentrated on the basics of local geology, including glacial history and processes, and local hydrology. Forty people followed our "pied geologist." Many walkers indicated that they wanted to know even more about geology! A second activity of Earth Science Week was to initiate a 4th-grade curriculum development program with local elementary schools. Beth met with 4th-grade teachers to design a field trip, class activities, and local science resources that would help them meet their teaching-standard requirements for incorporating Earth science into their science curriculum. Although initiated during Earth Science Week, this activity will continue throughout the next few months as the curriculum is developed. Beth is also chairperson for the local Woods Hole Science and Technology Partnership program, which provides opportunities for partnering, networking, mentoring, and small grants to encourage collaboration between the local scientific community and the school system.

On Sunday night a strange thing happened at the Smith family's home. Right after dinner Mr. Smith went to watch his favorite TV show. Mrs. Smith went to read a book. John sat down at the computer to type up a school report. Jane grabbed the cordless phone to call her best friend. Suddenly, Mr. Smith's TV went blank, Mrs. Smith's reading light stopped shining, John's computer shut down, and Jane's phone went dead. What happened? On Monday morning, the entire town learned that it no longer had any electricity! It had been so hot lately that everyone ran their air conditioners all day long for weeks. Now, all the electricity has been used up. How would everyone cook dinner? Or wash clothes? Or blow dry their hair?

This unit aims at helping teachers to sort and organize the most important ideas in this rich scientific area. *This packet is only available online. K-3 In Mud Fossils, K-3 students are invited to explore and observe real fossils and then make their own fossils using mud and found objects. *This packet is only available online. K-3 This packet is appropriate for grades 4-6. It covers four themes: time, change, natural cycles, and the Earth as home. Includes a two-sided color poster, teacher guide, and three activities. Each activity includes background material, an experiment, three lesson plans, and suggestions for further reading. Land and People: Finding a Balance is an environmental study project that engages high school students in studying ecosystems resource issues. The project focuses on the interaction between people and the environment in three regions on the United States: Cape Cod, Los Angeles, and the Everglades. In Geologic Age, students (grade 7-12) investigate radioactivity as a tool for measuring geologic time and how geologists use this information to determine the absolute age of rocks or minerals.

Several Maine organizations are conducting research and education activities that relate to the study of Earth from space and the upper atmosphere. The following Affiliates of the Maine Space Grant Consortium are currently working on such projects: Gulf of Maine Aquarium GMA translates aquatic science for K-12 audiences and the general public. Because satellites offer a unique perspective on global aquatic ecosystems, much of GMA's work in recent years has relied on NASA and NOAA satellite imagery. Current or recent NASA-funded projects include the development of 100 Web-based K-12 activities about satellite imaging; the design, development and statewide dissemination of a public exhibit about how NASA's TOPEX/Poseidon oceanographic satellite works; and a series of hurricane posters with related classroom activities. Visit GMA's web site to learn more. Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences Bigelow Lab examines Maine's seas "From Microscopes to Satellites." Much of their research focuses on plankton, which provide the basis for all marine life. Using NASA's satellite-derived images of ocean color, Bigelow's scientists study how patterns of sunlight and nutrients influence where phytoplankton grow. They also examine how natural processes affect distribution and interactions among marine organisms such as lobsters. Visit Bigelow's web site to learn more.
