The grant established the John D. MacArthur Agro-ecology Research Center (MAERC) as a division of Archbold. Mission The primary mission of MAERC is to conduct and stimulate long-term research on the relationships among cattle ranching, citrus production, and the native ecological systems of central Florida. Research Partners During 1994, three organziations (MAERC, University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), South Florida Water Management District) created a cooperative group to initiate a multi-disciplinary research program at the Buck Island Ranch. In 1996 the Florida Cattleman's Association joined the group. These four organizations work together at MAERC in long-term monitoring, plus specific research projects in water quality, wildlife biology, and landscape ecology in relation to agriculture.

that focuses on ways to improve comfort, performance, and health through the ergonomic design of products and environments. Recent research focuses on the role of ambient physical characteristics in human well-being. Among the settings examined in recent years are schools, day care, homes, blue-collar work, and health care facilities. Human environment processes of interest include psychophysiological stress, psychological distress, learning and motivation, interpersonal relationships, mastery and control, emotional affect, including preference and satisfaction, and human development over the lifespan. Ecotecture
Ecotecture design is grounded on natural dynamics, healthy materials, biological principles, human ergonomics, cultural respect, and compassionate understanding for the planet and all living creatures. This is a new research program intended to push the boundaries of thinking on what constitutes sustainable or "green" design. International Workplace Studies Program (IWSP)
The International Workplace Studies Program (IWSP) at Cornell University conducts research on the ecology of new ways of working and innovative workplace strategies. The intent of the research is to help organizations gain a competitive advantage by better understanding how innovative workplace strategies contribute to the effectiveness of individuals, teams, and the organization as a whole.

ATREE's outreach activities have three broad aims. The first is capacity building of government and non-government organizations. The second is to create awareness about conservation and environmental issues. And third, participate in and foster networks to help promote the cause of conservation.
    1. Capacity Building As part of capacity building, ATREE has: a) developed and implemented participatory resource monitoring methods to enable forest dweller households to monitor and manage biological resources that they use to sustain their livelihoods, b) promoted
the establishment of a network of community organizations involved in conservation and rural development, c) provided financial
support and technical advice through its small grants program to individuals and organizations involved in conservation research
and education, and d) trained scores of individuals in areas as diverse as geographical information systems, participatory
    resource monitoring, and conservation science.

    Fellowships, Scholarships and Internships
Below are listed several types of funding for undergraduate research in the biological sciences. No listing of this type can be complete since no one office on campus has information on all opportunities and new opportunities arise frequently. In addition to considering the sources described below, you may want to check bulletin boards in departments for announcements on internships and other research opportunities. In addition, you may want to check with the faculty members and advisors who may be aware of opportunities in their areas. You may also want to visit career planning offices for additional lists of funding opportunities for research. Academic Excellence Awards (University Book Store) recognize students who have completed outstanding undergraduate research projects in a number of disciplines, including the biological sciences. For more information contact the Provost's Office at 262-1304. Application forms are available at the Provost's Office, Rm 150 Bascom Hall. The Bacteriology department has a Career Resource Guide web page which lists internship and scholarship opportunities in the department as well as off-campus.
