They display an incredible range of form and size and, when they bloom, an impressive palette of extraordinary colors. These plants are native to the tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas, the majority indigenous to South America. Most of them grow as air plants on the trunks and branches of trees. Some species wrap their roots around porous rocks, while others, such as the pineapple and "earth stars," grow in the soil. To obtain unusual and rare species, I recommend joining plant societies. My Friends - the Frogs While turtles are probably my favorite animal, I must confess that frogs are a very close second. I only have 1 house frog right now - Benny,a White's tree frog that has lived with me for 4 years. However, the ponds outdoors are nursery to the toads (Bufo americanus). In the spring, the male can be heard calling every night. A few weeks later, like magic, hundreds of tadpoles appear. In July, a dozen or so young green frogs arrive. I am hoping this year they will over-winter as my new pond is deep enough for hibernation. Hopefully, next spring, we will have green frog tadpoles. Update: June 25, 2001 - Sadly, Benny died this week. After having had him for 5 years, he will be missed. Out in the pond, tiny toad tadpoles are swimming around eating algae from the rocks. While there are a half dozen green frogs from last year, there have been no signs of green frog tadpoles. Maybe they are still not old enough? Update: August 26, 2001 - The toad tadpoles have all metamorphosized and are tiny toadlets in the grass. Many new green froglets and young leopard frogs have arrived from who-knows-where to join the older green frogs in the pond. Notebook Home Search Contact Us Frogs and Toads Two species of frogs and one species of toad are known in Alaska. These small amphibians are the spotted frog Rana pretiosa ), the wood frog Rana sylvatica ), and the western toad Bufo boreas ). The spotted frog is rarely seen far from the water while the wood frog is frequently found away from water and in diverse habitats. The western toad is the only toad found in Alaska. The wood frog is the most widely distributed frog in Alaska. Individuals have been observed from southeastern Alaska to north of the Brooks Range, inhabiting diverse vegetation from grasslands to forest, muskeg, and tundra. This smooth-skinned frog is generally light brown or gray in color and has many pattern variations. A dark eye mask is usually evident, and undersurface color is uniformly cream white. A light stripe down the back is often present, and many northern individuals have dark spots on the dorsal surface. The darker coloration of northern frogs is thought to be important to heat economy by absorbing more solar energy. Adults may attain a length of 3 inches (7.6 cm). True frogs The Savannah River Site, rich in wetlands, provides habitat for many species of anurans, the frogs and toads. Anurans all look similar: They are tail-less as adults, but they exhibit a variety of modifications that suit them for their different ways of life. True frogs have powerful hind legs with extensive webbing on their back feet for swimming. Treefrogs have sticky disks on their toes for climbing, and toads have a drier skin for a more terrestrial existence. Like their relatives, the salamanders, most frogs and toads exhibit a complex life cycle, beginning as an egg, hatching into an aquatic larva (a tadpole, which does have a tail), undergoing metamorphosis, and eventually leaving the water in the adult form. This process takes longer in some species than in others. Spadefoot toads, for example, often breed in temporary pools, so their development time must be brief to avoid drying. They metamorphose in just a few weeks. The more aquatic bullfrog drops her eggs in permanent waters, and the tadpoles may take as long as two years to complete development. Some of these animals are commonly encountered, but others are secretive, spending most of their time underground, in the water, or high in trees. The best time to observe the more inconspicuous frogs and toads is during breeding season. On warm spring and summer nights the wetlands of the SRS are humming with frog songs, as males call out to attract potential mates.
