(beginners tutorial)
This is a practical guide to some advanced, but still not terribly complicated, HTML features that can be used to create Web pages with only a word processor (and occasionally some readily available free- or shareware). Some of these techniques require enough tedious tagging that you might want to use an HTML editor to accomplish them, but you don't have to. Here is some information (and some opinions) on HTML editors. In deciding what topics to include in this guide, and at what level to explain them, I am assuming that you have a familiarity at least with the topics covered in my basic HTML guide: Quick and Painless HTML. I do a great deal more referring to other sources in this guide than in the previous one, because some of these topics and techniques are not as familiar to me as basic HTML, and I therefore don't feel qualified to go into the level of detail that some readers might want. Fortunately, there are many wonderful explanatory sites, tutorials and other resources on the Web. After the table of contents below, I have compiled

The Body Tag
The BODY tag controls the appearance of the page, it's colors and background information. A common customized BODY tag has these attributes: <BODY BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF" TEXT="#000000" LINK="#800000" VLINK="#008000" ALINK="#FF0000"> This creates a page with a white background, black text, dark red links, dark green visited links, and bright red active links. The active link color is only seen the instant a link is clicked on, but is important to keep a page consistent. Usually the colors of a page have a common standard to them. The links have a good bright contrast that distinguishes them form the regular text; the visited links are closer in color to the text than the unvisited links and are often a cool color (like blue, green, gray, etc.); and the active link is best done as a brighter version of the link color. To use a graphic tiled on your page background instead of a solid color, add the BACKGROUND attribute to your BODY tag as follows:

SEAS Computing and Networking Group
INTRODUCTION
This second session on the UNIX operating system, called Intermediate UNIX, assumes a basic working knowledge of simple UNIX commands and an understanding of the concepts discussed in a previous seminar, An Introduction To UNIX . In particular, an understanding of the "rooted tree" file layout and the basic file and directory handling commands are needed. The UNIX tools and facilities discussed in this document and tutorial are intended to help users to customize their working environment, simplify some complex tasks, and to do more sophisticated management of their files. An outside reference that may be of some interest on this subject material is "The UNIX Programming Environment" by Kernighan and Pike.
CONVENTIONS
Throughout this document the following conventions will be used: Text appearing in the Helvetica Normal and Bold fonts, such as this, is instruction and narrative. Text appearing in the Courier font such as -rw-rr 1 dela 4872 Nov 4 16:05 slides.txt represents text which the computer system prints.

Intermediate HTML Tutorial
Introduction
The purpose of this tutorial is to introduce a few more commands and concepts to give HTML authors more flexibility to create documents. Several other guides attempt to provide more thorough coverage, including NCSA's "A Beginner's Guide To HTML" which is available at the URL http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/General/Internet/WWW/HTMLPrimer.html
More Commands and Concepts
This tutorial covers the following 11 topics:
  • Nesting
  • Inlined Images
  • Aligning Inlined Images and Text
  • Aligning Headers ...
  • Author/Signature Blocks
    Nesting
Nesting refers to organizing a set of commands inside of other commands. For example, if you wanted to create a list under one item already within a list, it might look like this:
The HTML commands to the left will look something like this within Mosaic:
  • Weather
    • Local
    • National
  • Physics
  • Chemistry As long as you begin and end one command set completely within another (for example, ), you can nest as many commands as you need. However, you cannot overlap command sets (e.g.,

Intermediate HTML is the second one of a series of HTML training classes that are being offered at Brown. This class assumes that you are familiar with the basic concepts of HTML and WWW authoring. In order to be able to actually publish documents using the WWW at Brown, you should also be familiar with or take the classes on uploading files to the WWW server using Fetch or RapidFiler and basic UNIX for HTML Authors. A note for Brown WWW publishers: If you are going to publish on the Brown University WWW, you are responsible for knowing the current Brown WWW policies You can find these on the Brown home page, and should check them periodically for updates. A note for users of this document: This document can be used for a self-paced introduction to the basics of HTML. However, you should know that it was originally designed to accompany an instructor-led class. It is not meant to be exhaustive, and there are aspects, even of the HTML that is covered in the class, that are not complete. Most of that information is not necessary for a beginner, so its absence should not present a problem. You should be aware of its limitations, however, and use more complete reference material (referred to in the sections on HTML) when appropriate.

HTML is an application of SGML, and as such it has a Document Type Definition (DTD) that provides it with rules for where elements may appear and what other elements they may contain. Validators are programs that read in an HTML file and tell you if you have syntax errors. There are a number of them on the WWW. At Brown
