BIRDS Birding How to observe birds, identifies them, study them and enjoy them 1. The birder (birdwatcher)
An interesting and enjoying way of leisure is the birding. No doubts that seeing birds, mainly in their savage state is so generous and a rare opportunity for thinking about life's meaning, because they represent liberty with its potential of flying and easy locomotion, as for its beauty. The one who has this opportunity and learns its signification is a privileged person.
If you have access to a preserved natural area, it is still better, because then you will have better chances for birding more species. The most savage place of birds' observation, more species for seeing and hearing.
The birds' observation, besides a pleasure hobby, can become a challenge to the observer, because there are so many species, making the studies interesting.
So, if you are a curious and like nature, why not birding? Why not becoming a birder? To see the birds and also studying them, since they are in almost all the places, as cities, forests and country.
Don't forget that there are 1.650 known species in Brazil, and Amazônia hasn't already been completely explored.

After studying a variety of birds and their features, the students selected one bird to study in depth. They had four attributes that they were required to find out about. These were:
    • where the bird lives what the bird eats type of feet type of beak
This information was then presented as a "What Am I?" poster on a Word template (Word doc, 19k). Included on this poster was a title, four bulleted clues, and a picture of their bird hidden by a lift up flap. These posters provided a class activity. Students were encouraged to read the clues that were written by others in the class and guess the bird they had chosen. They could then lift the flap and see if they were correct.

Article III - The ABC's Of Leg Bands
      THE ABC's OF LEG BANDS
      by Carol Highfill
There are a number of reasons why identification of a bird is important. These include proof of ownership, governmental requirements, identification of lost or stolen birds, and tracking of birds for breeding purposes. The ability to identify a bird also acts as a deterrent to smugglers and the illegal bird trade. Thus it has a positive impact on saving birds in their natural environments.
The most widely accepted means of identification of birds today is the leg band. Microchipping and DNA fingerprinting are alternative methods which are gaining in popularity. Many people prefer these newer methods for a variety of reasons. However at this time, the leg band is required by many governmental organizations.
For this reason, it is important to understand as much about banding as possible. This article will discuss the different types of bands, the reasons for their use, the issue of band removal and the methods of tracing a band. It is intended to present information so that bird owners can make their own informed decisions.
        CLOSED AND OPEN BANDS
Closed bands are found on birds which have been banded as babies. This usually means that they are captive bred. In the US we associate this with domestically bred birds, but captive bred birds from other countries also have closed bands.

This document has been OCR scanned Lesson 3 Identifying Local Birds Objectives: 1) Students will develop their powers of observation and their ability to make inferences by looking for birds and bird signs. 2) Students will collect and interpret data about local birds and identify birds both by learning the practices of their elders and by use of field guides and other written sources. 3) Students will name and cite identifying characteristics of at least 10 birds which are found locally. Notes on Bird Identification Birds were a very important part of the natural world for Interior Athabascans in times past. Game birds formed a necessary part of their diet and in times of starvation even the smaller birds helped the people survive. Many birds had other important functions as well. (See Lesson 7). For these reasons and also because birds were believed at one time to have had human form, they were highly respected and the indigenous people of Alaska had a detailed knowledge of the birds and their habits. Do not be surprised, however, if elders and other community members do not know the local birds by the names found in bird books. They may call them by a descriptive name in English such as "big-eye bird" or "black chicken" or they may know them only by their Native names.
