The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry announces the opening of a Center for Vaccine Biology and Immunology in the new Aab Institute of Biomedical Sciences . This is an exciting time to apply recent advances in our understanding of immune regulation to the design of new vaccines for 'difficult' infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS, and also to create new types of vaccines for treating cancer, allergy and autoimmunity. Building on the existing strong programs in Immunology, Microbiology and Vaccine Biology at the University of Rochester, the new Center will focus on basic research into immunological mechanisms with the long-term goal of helping to design the next generation of vaccines. The Center occupies 31,500 square feet of research space on the top floor of the

The Division of Molecular Biology and Immunology is predominantly concerned with an experimental biological approach to the study of a number of important eukaryotic parasites of humans. Many of our studies are directed towards developing new methods for the treatment and diagnosis of disease but we are also concerned with the mechanisms by which parasites induce disease. A unique part of our activity that is not related to the study of parasites is snake venom research which deals with a very important public health problem in the tropics. In recognition of its status the Venom Unit is a WHO Collaborating Centre for the Control of Antivenoms. In addition to the studies that may have a practical application there is also work in the division of a more fundamental nature examining basic issues in the cell biology and molecular genetics of parasites.

The division carries out fundamental research on a number of parasites and their interactions with insect vectors and mammalian hosts. The main parasites studied are the malaria parasite, Leishmania and the filarial nematodes; a special feature of the division is snake venom research. A wide ranging approach to these studies includes molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, chemotherapy, the immune response to infection and vaccination. Though much of the activity of the division is centred on a laboratory base, in all areas of research relevant research findings are translated into a field setting.
