Taking sides in Israel's culture war
Entertainment-related controversies pit religious against secular
AVI MACHLIS
Jewish Telegraphic Agency Dana International's triumphant visit to the Knesset was something of a surprise in the world of Israeli politics. To many secular Israelis, the appearance earlier this month of Israel's raven-haired transsexual singing star before the legislature's Education and Culture Committee was a victory in what Israeli newspapers recently dubbed an ongoing "cultural war."
The opening shot, they say, was the successful pressure by the fervently Orthodox, or haredim, to censor the Batsheva dance troupe's act at Israel's official jubilee celebrations because the dancers were scheduled to strip to their underwear as part of the performance. But Dana's triumph, say some analysts, may have played into the hands of the haredim by confirming their stereotypes of secular culture. And a closer look at the so-called cultural war shows that it has little to do with culture, and a lot to do with politics and power.
After her recent triumph at the annual Eurovision song contest where she rose to sudden prominence Dana casually gave Tourism Minister Moshe Katzav a kiss in front of the cameras while clad in skin-tight clothes. "I don't regard myself as anyone's symbol," she said. "I see myself as a singer." Photo opportunities such as these were a perfect opportunity for secular Knesset members from the right and left to prove they were not beholden to the fervently Orthodox. But when Dana arrived in the Knesset, fervently Orthodox lawmakers did not interfere

JUST A FLESH WOUND: Yes, I know I'm a Python freak. Got 'em all on DVD. But I suddenly realized who Mohammed Said Sahaf reminds me of, declaring victory as allied troops police the streets around him, explaining that the Baghdad Airport is still held by Iraqis, etc. etc. He's that wounded knight in the "Holy Grail," with every limb cut off, daring his opponent to have another whack at him. If he weren't a monster, he'd be quite funny.
BBC UPDATE: A new low. The World Service just described this goon as "the public face of Iraqi resistance."

NOW, THE KIDS: Yep, over a hundred children - yes, children - escaped from a Saddam prison today. They had been jailed because they wouldn't join the Hitler, er, Saddam Youth. They are deliriously happy, along with their parents. They gave the G.I.s two signs: a thumbs-up and then they held their wrists together to signify that they had been chained up. On the same day, James Carroll of the Boston Globe asks this question: "Does your nation any longer know that it, too, is part of the human family? That that family is now warning of a fatal loss of trust in the ideal for which the American flag has so long stood? Are that flag, and all who have carried it, honored by what is being done under its sign today?" Carroll's answer is no. Maybe he should usher those kids back into prison himself.

Olive Culture in Ancient Israel
by David Eitam
David Eitam is an archeologist who specialized in ancient industries of the Holy Land. Four years ago he founded “More Netofa”, a private company that produces gourmet olive oil, honey and spice mixtures, using ancient recipes and modern methods. He also conducts workshops about olive oil, at his home, in Hararit in the Galilee (see related article). The olive tree and its oil have been major components in the culture and rituals of Ancient Israel and the economy of its inhabitants throughout history. Its prominent status is revealed by numerous verses in the Old Testament, the Mishnah and the Talmud.

What A Difference A Decade Makes
By Simon Griver
Philip Galpert, who immigrated to Israel from Ukraine, said that over the years he has come to appreciate the importance of his Jewish heritage and its central place in Israel's culture. Philip Galpert participated as a teenager in the first Midreshet Yerushalayim Ramah Yahad summer camp in Ukraine back in 1993. Then a Ukrainian high school student, he immigrated to Israel the following year, and this summer returned as a counselor to the tenth consecutive annual Ramah Yahad camp. "How things have changed," observed Galpert. "When I was at the camp we knew nothing about Judaism. We could not read or write Hebrew. This summer most of the children at the camp were familiar with Hebrew and some could even speak the language. Having grown up in the former Soviet Union and knowing very little about his Jewish heritage, Galpert, who studies sports physical rehabilitation at the Wingate Institute in Israel, recalled that when he attended the camp he felt very alienated from prayer. It was the first time he had ever seen, let alone opened a siddur.

History Coffee In Israel by Myron Joshua In a recent article in the Jerusalem Post, the Israeli English Language daily, Herb Keinon writes about "Culture in a Cup", the growth of coffee shop culture in Israel during the past five years. During the 1940's and 50's, Israel (a young country now only 52 years old) used to have coffee shops that had a thriving business selling...soda water (flavored and unflavored). That's what people could afford when they were looking for a quiet spot to sit and talk with friends, or argue ideology (a great pastime amongst the ideologues and writers of this new immigrant society.) Coffee was rare in the country that had to ration food during difficult war times and had to invest in the very basics to absorb immigrants and post WWII refugees. Ironically, it may have been the harsh times and required military service (including reserve duty of one or two months a year for all adult males through the age of 50) that laid the cornerstone for a now striving coffee culture that includes espresso bars, outdoor cafes throughout the country. In a recently published Coffee Table book about coffee itself, author Matam Shiram writes about the ritual of coffee preparation in the Israeli army: "Coffee in the reserves is our exclusive invention. It is an Israeli institution that is difficult to describe...You have to imagine the dunes and the beating sun (or conversely the pouring rain), the sweaty uniforms, the smell of oil on the tank... And it is especially necessary to imagine the smell of the coffee cooking in the finjan...

Last week, a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up on a Tel Aviv bus, propelling pounds of densely packed metal shrapnel into the vehicle's passengers. Five people were killed instantly, and 60 others wounded. The event presumably failed to darken the day of Ted Honderich, a Canadian-born philosopher who teaches at University College London. Last week, he told an audience in Toronto that Palestinians have a "moral right" to blow up Jews. And he encourages them to exercise it: "To claim a moral right on behalf of the Palestinians to their terrorism is to say that they are right to engage in it, that it is permissible if not obligatory." In Britain, where Honderich now lives, his theories have generated controversy. A disgusted Daily Telegraph reviewer called his new book, After the Terror, "one of the worst books I have ever read." But on his Canadian tour, Honderich was greeted warmly. Following his lecture at the University of Toronto, audience members lined up to respectfully parse the fine points of his philosophical theories. And since Honderich blames the West and Israel for what happened on Sept. 11, the CBC naturally regards him as star material. On Sept. 8, Michael Enright interviewed Honderich on national radio an opportunity Honderich used to repeat his claim that suicide bombings are a proper response to Israel's "rape" of Palestine.

Ahavat Torat Israel "... and the study of the Torah is equivalent to them all" (Talmud, Shabbat 127a) The word torah means "a teaching". The Torah is G-d's teaching to the Jewish people. In the Torah G-d tells us how to live. The Torah is also called "Torat Chaim", the guide to life. The Torah has many mitzvot (commandments) in it. They are G-d's instructions to us. The Torah also contains stories. These stories are true and teach us about our history and our relationship with G-d. The Torah has two sections, the Torah Shebiktav (the Written Torah) and the Torah Shebeal Peh (the Oral Torah). The Torah Shebiktav has three parts:
  • Torah : This is the part that was given directly to Moshe Rabbeinu (Moses our Teacher) at Mount Sinai. It is made up of five books. Each book is called a Chumash
    • Bereishit (Genesis)
    • Shemot (Exodus)
    • Vayikra (Leviticus)
    • Bamidbar (Numbers)
    • Devarim (Deuteronomy)
  • Neviim (Prophets): Prophets are great and saintly people who communicate with G-d. These books are recordings of some of what G-d said to His prophets.
    • Yehoshua (Joshua)
    • Shoftim (Judges)
    • Shmuel (Samuel) - two books
    • Melachim (Kings) - two books
    • Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah)
    • Yechezkel (Ezekiel)
    • Yeshayahu (Isaiah)
    • The following twelve are combined in one book called Trey Asar (The Twelve):
    • Hoshaia (Hosea)
    • Yoel (Joel)
    • Amos
