http://www.studyusa.com/boarding/articles/arts.htm
Considering an Arts Program? by Mark Friedman International students often find that arts programs play an especially appealing role in selecting a boarding school in the United States. In fact, you may be considering a U.S. education because both contemporary and traditional arts are flourishing in this country, and many of our boarding schools excel in arts instruction. To be sure, arts programs vary widely from school to school. Some schools specialize in the arts, with intensive classes in dance, theatre, music, and so forth. Some offer a strong arts program in connection with a more traditional curriculum. Other schools offer relatively little instruction in the arts.
Selecting a program
Finding a school which matches your interests requires some thought about the nature of your needs and goals and how they may change over time. Understanding this will help you determine what resources you desire. Spend time reading each school's literature and exploring its website. Examine the facilities available - the theater, studios, practice rooms. If at all possible, consider campus visits. Meet or correspond with teachers in your area of interest. Ask them how much time is available each day to pursue your artistic endeavors, and the school's success record in placing its students in universities and institutes with opportunities in the arts. Find out what special arrangements the school may make if you have an unusual interest or talent. For example, you may be able to study privately with a local performer or join classes at the city's dance academy.

BRIAN DICKERSON: Single-sex classes are worth a look
February 10, 2003
  • Brian Dickerson's column Monday should have identified the psychologist and family physician who founded the National Association for Single Sex Public Education as Dr. Leonard Sax. BY BRIAN DICKERSON
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST Single-sex classrooms a phenomenon most Americans associate with uniformed Catholic students and boarding schools for the British upper classes have begun popping up in Michigan public schools, and defenders of the coed status quo are already circling their wagons. The Michigan Education Association has denounced teaching boys and girls separately as sexist and urged state legislators to oppose a bill that would sanction single-sex teaching experiments. Other critics see single-sex classrooms as the leading edge of a conservative effort to legitimize other kinds of segregation by demonstrating an educational benefit to minority students. If these reflexive naysayers would take a deep breath and do some homework, they might be surprised by what researchers have discovered about differences in the way boys and girls learn.

    'Potter' nds many fans
Los Angeles Times I happened to be sitting in an English hospital theother day with my nose in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" when an officious nurse spotted the children's paperbackin my hand and marched up to me. "You could at least read the adult edition," she barked. "I think that's hypocritical," I sputtered. The nurse, whose children apparently had long since grown intoadulthood, melted, a warm smile spreading across her broad face. "Oh, me too," she said. "I've read all three Harry Potterbooks." It doesn't take a child or even the slightest bit of magic, for that matter, to figure out why the Harry Potter books are such a hit with young and old alike: The orphaned wizard featured in theseries is absolutely divine. Author J.K. Rowling's third spellbinding book, "Harry Potterand the Prisoner of Azkaban," went on sale in the United Stateslast week after a long wait for fans who hadn't already rushed tobuy it on the Internet. Or who weren't lucky enough to have friendssend them copies from Britain, where it went on sale at exactly 3:45 one afternoon early this summer - a time selected to avoidschool truancies - and sold more than 60,000 copies in the first three days. That was more than the hungrily awaited "Hannibal," Thomas Harris' sequel to "The Silence of the Lambs," and more than any children's book in the memory of British publishing.

ABSTRACT: This follow-up study of black graduates of A
Better Chance (ABC) concludes that race is a more important
factor than class in the personal and social identity of
blacks. ABC was an innovative program launched in 1963 by 16 independent secondary schools to recruit and prepare minority group students for entry into exclusive boarding schools, elite colleges and universities, and ultimately positions of power and prestige in U.S. society. A representative sample of 38 black graduates was interviewed twenty years after graduation about their experiences in the program and its effects on their interpersonal relationships and careers. ABC negated the usual social-psychological dialectic between the powerful and the powerless by initiating black students into a new social and psychological identity that overcame the effects of stigmatization and any inclinations toward an oppositional identity. Even though class has become more important to

Surely those aforementioned columnists could have offered something more substantive to their readership, perhaps along the lines of discussing the Amicus brief filed on behalf of 30 corporations, including Microsoft, supporting pro-active efforts to admit minorities; or on the system at Michigan, its pros and cons. Granted, a personal attack on George Bush is a good way to stoke emotion, but it is disingenuous and divisive, and takes the discourse away from the real issues at hand.
Hopefully, those who filed the Amicus briefs, those arguing the case, and those ultimately deciding the matter, will base the outcome on something other than the fodder contained in the media drivel.

Corunna Public Schools / Shiawassee Street School
Corunna Public Schools The Corunna School District was organized in 1842. Later that year a one-story frame school house was constructed. A teacher, Miss Cook was hired in 1843 and received the "unprecedented salary of $2.50 per week" and the "privilege of boarding 'round" in the community. In 1851 a two-story brick school was built to accommodate Corunna's growing population. A larger , three-story brick school was erected in 1866 just north of the schoolhouse. In the fall of 1882, both buildings burned. Another three-story brick school was constructed later that year to serve grades kindergarten through twelve. On April 14, 1908, that school burned. The present school was built that same year with funds from insurance policies and a city bond issue. Shiawassee Street School Edwyn A. Bowd of Lansing, an architect popular in the early twentieth century for his plans of public buildings, designed the Shiawassee Street School, which opened in January 1909. Rickman and Son, who built the Shiawassee County Courthouse in 1903 - 1904, constructed this school at a cost of $31,000. The Georgian Revival style school is trimmed in limestone. The bell in the cupola was cast in 1882 and donated by the Corunna Presbyterian Church upon the school's completion. The building served as an elementary school between 1952 and 1976, when it became the home of Community Education courses and the Corunna Public Schools Administrative Offices. This was the fifth school built on this site since 1842.
