Statement of Purpose The Microbial Genomics and Ecology Group in the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory focuses on microbial ecology and genomics of environmental organisms. The group is concerned with the basic science underlying bioremediation efforts, carbon cycling and sequestration, as well as other uses of biotechnology. The group's research couples molecular biology, DNA technology, genomics, and bioreporter techniques with traditional microbiological methods to investigate microbial communities and the processes by which microorganisms transform materials and energy. The goal of these investigations is to increase the understanding of microbial ecology, nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, and microbial degradation of hazardous contaminants; to demonstrate application of innovative microbial techniques and bioremediation approaches in solving the

What is Microbial Ecology? What is microbial ecology Topics in microbial ecology Site Map About the ISME ... Jobs What is microbial ecology? Microbial ecology is the study of microbes in the environment and their interactions with each other. Microbes are the tiniest creatures on Earth, yet despite their small size, they have a have a huge impact on us and on our environment. Microbial ecology can help answer some of our most practical questions such as "how do we improve our lives?" as well as basic questions such as "why are we here?" Microbial ecology can tell us our place in the cosmos - how life originated and how it evolved, and how we are related to the great diversity of all other organisms. Mac, the Mighty Microbe may be minute, but this marvelous microbe and his minions affect us and our environment in many ways. The study of microbial ecology can help us improve our lives via the use of microbes in environmental restoration, food production, bioengineering of useful products such as antibiotics, food supplements, and chemicals. The study of these bizarre and diverse creatures who are everywhere yet nowhere to be seen is fascinating and a pursuit that appeals to the curious and playful in us.

Description: Part of microbial ecology is the understanding the dynamics of microbe populations. "'Biota' is a rich system for modeling and simulating population dynamics. It supports the study of multiple species in diverse environments with migration between regions and multiple species interactions. An integrated set of 'field tools' is also provided so that pre-authored models can be used as 'black box' problems for simulated filed studies." ~ by the authors

    DirtLand
Microbes inhabit almost every niche you can think of, from 20 miles beneath the Earth's surface to 20 miles overhead. They live at temperatures less than -20 degrees Celsius to temperatures hotter than the boiling point. Microbes thrive on a huge range of foods including oil and toxic wastes. Animal Pavilion
Most animals interact with microbes in important ways, and all animals, as well as all plants and fungi, depend on microbes for their survival. Snack Bar
Without microbes, eating would be a boring pastime. Many foods, including cheese, chocolate, tea, bread, root beer, and many others are processed by microbes. Explore this environment to find out what microbes you have been eating! Space Adventure
The Space Adventure pavilion has three main themes: speculation about extraterrestrial life and the forms that it might take, attempts to use microbes in creating closed-cycle ecosystems to support future space stations and lunar bases, and microbes in the atmosphere. Microbes relevant to these three themes will be featured in the Space Adventure pavilion.
