The President and First Lady opened their home for their last official "New Year's Day levee" on January 1, 1824. The party was held in the "elliptical salon," featuring deep crimson silk papers and gilt borders. The vignette features furniture used at the "President's House" during Monroe's administration. 1824 New Year's Day Levee at the White House A letter published in the Philadelphia Times ,* written by a Mrs. Tuley of Virginia in 1825, gives the following description of her experience at the last New Year's levee held at the White House during James Monroe's administration
"Mr. Monroe was standing near the door, and as we were introduced we had the honor of shaking hands with him and passing the usual congratulations of the season. My impressions of Mr. Monroe are very pleasing. He is tall and well formed. His dress plain and in the old style, small clothes, silk hose, knee-buckles, and pumps fastened with buckles. His manner was quiet and dignified. From the frank, honest expression of his eye, which is said to be 'the window of the soul,' I think he well deserves the encomium passed upon him by the great Jefferson, who said, 'Monroe was so honest that if you turned his soul inside out there would not be a spot on it.'

On October 17 , 1823, President James Monroe wrote a letter to his friend and Virginia neighbor Thomas Jefferson seeking advice on foreign policy. The issue at hand was whether to join forces with Britain in a joint-declaration against Spain's efforts to regain sovereignty in South America. Both Jefferson and former president James Madison , whom Monroe also consulted, recommended cooperation with Britain. However, Monroe's Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams, was more cautious. "It would be more candid," Adams warned Monroe at a November 7, 1823 cabinet meeting, "as well as more dignified, to avow our principles explicitly to Russia and France, than to come in as a cockboat in the wake of the British man-of-war."

  • Winning the first presidency by a unanimous vote, with some individuals having wished to make Washington king, it seems unusual that he did not really want the position of president. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nation’s first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.

The Fifth President Of The United States
    James Monroe
    Term: 1817 - 1825
    First Lady: Elizabeth Kortight Monroe
Vice President: Daniel D. Tompkins Daniel D. Tompkins (1774-1825), American political leader. Governor of New York and Vice President Of The United States, he was also a prominent reformer. Tompkins was born in Scarsdale, N.Y., on June 21, 1774. He graduated from Columbia College in 1795, was admitted to the New York bar in 1797, and was elected to the state legislature in 1803. The following year he was elected to congress but resigned to serve on the New York supreme court. Tompkins was U.S. vice president under James Monroe from 1817 to 1825. In 1824, Congress reimbursed him for personal losses in public service, a vindication of charges that as governor he had mismanaged state and federal funds during the War of 1812. He died in Staten Island, N.Y., on June 11, 1825. Did you know. . . ? In 1820 a girl was born named Susan B. Anthony who became one of the most recognized woman for "woman's suffrage". Her tireless campaign for woman's suffrage made her a leader in the first wave of American feminism. The daughter of Quaker abolitionists, Susan B. Anthony was incensed that women were barred from speaking at temperance meetings. She barnstormed for equality and was insulted, vilified, even pelted with rotten eggs for her trouble. After brazenly casting a vote in 1812, she was arrested and fined $100 (which she never paid). The ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, 14 years after her death, finally confirmed her credo: "Failure is impossible." Susan B. Anthony died in 1906, and is found on some of the U.S. minted dollar coins.
