The Ohio Geographic Alliance
The Ohio Geographic Alliance is part of the system of state alliances established by the National Geographic Society after the 1984 "Nation At Risk" report revealed a need to revitalize K-12 geography instruction. There are now Alliances in all 50 states, as well as the Canadian provinces and several U.S. territories. The Ohio Geography Alliance has been active since 1990, training several hundred teachers in state and regional workshops. The Ohio Geographic Alliance is housed at the Mershon Center for Strategic Issues at The Ohio States University. Dr. W. Randy Smith has served as the coordinator of OGA since its inception. There are several classroom teachers serving as "senior Teacher Consultants", and a number of geography professionals from universities throughout the state working together to:
  • develop workshops and training institutes for Ohio teachers
  • develop instructional materials for classroom use
  • work with state education leaders to reestablish geography education as a priority
  • conduct the Ohio Geography Bee
  • support Geography Awareness Week
  • support other geography programs for families , students, and teachers

PAUL ELMER FOSTER Paul E. Foster (1919-1998, born Chagrin Falls, Ohio) is my father. This WebSite is composed of memories of his that he wrote when he first started having severe health problems and I asked him to write down his memories for me. They are reproduced here for others' enjoyment and edification. He was proud of his McFarland heritage and traced his roots back, through Richard Warren of the Mayflower, to Scotland. He has written a detailed genealogy. Perhaps his relationship to the real Mother Goose makes him such an engaging writer. He graduated from Case School of Applied Science (Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity) and was immediately commissioned into the U.S. Navy (Commander, USNR) which sent him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After the war, he moved back to the Cleveland area and worked for Arthur G. McKee and Co. He left McKee and joined our nation's space program. What really ignited a flame in his heart was America's space program. He served as Chief of Technology Utilization and traveled all over the country speaking on the benefits and spin-offs of our space program. He met the original cast of Star Trek and credits the show with making the space program more personal to Americans. He and Julie had two children, Paul Elmer Foster, Jr. (married to Leslie Beck) and Janine Allayne Foster (married to Judge Bruce Woody), and our family traveled all over the country and to other countries. He was very active in his community and church. The songs that accompany the letters represent things which were important to him: his faith, his work, his wife and family, his friends.

T he Master's Degree program in Geography allows for broad geographic training in environmental management, land use planning, development, and landscape studies together with the technical specializations of quantitative methods, GIS, remote sensing, and cartography. The program was founded in 1969 and the graduate program was founded in 1971. The department has approximately 150 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students in residence. Both thesis and nonthesis options are available. Students pursuing the thesis option must complete a minimum of nine courses, seven of which must be in geography. Students must also successfully defend both the thesis proposal and the completed thesis. Students following the nonthesis option must complete a minimum of 60 credit hours of graduate study, 50 of which must be in geography. Nonthesis students must develop a program within two fields of systematic emphasis chosen from areas such as cultural, physical, resource management, population or urban, supported by at least two courses in geographic techniques. The degree is completed by passing a three-part comprehensive written examination. Geography courses that are required for both the thesis and nonthesis tracks include Quantitative Methods, Research and Writing, and at least two seminars in geography. The Geology and Geography Department
Ohio Wesleyan University
The Geology and Geography Department has a long and honored history. Ohio Wesleyan University appointed its first professor of geology in 1846. Over the next century and a half, the department grew to encompass physical and cultural geography as well as expanding its fields in geology. The geologist studies the earth environment : the materials that compose the earth, the various physical and chemical changes that occur on its surface and interior, and the history of the planet (including life) from its origin. The geographer plots the interaction between humans and their physical and cultural environment. Their pursuits may appear different, but both disciplines are linked by a common concern: to learn about the forces that have shaped our environment, the earth. Having both a traditional Natural Science discipline (geology) and a traditionally Social Science discipline (geography) in one department truly embraces the liberal-arts ideal and helps prepare students for the twenty-first century. Among liberal-arts institutions Ohio Wesleyan is unique in offering three earth-science majors, all of which lead to the bachelor of arts degree. The traditional geology major provides a strong and broad training that prepares you for graduate school, private-sector employment, and government employment. The Earth science major leads to certification for teaching at the secondary level. The Geography major includes concentrations in either physical or cultural geography. Ohio Wesleyan University also offers two interdisciplinary programs: Environmental Studies, and Urban Studies.

Geography is the study of the earth's surface. It helps us to know and understand the planet on which we live. Geographers are interested in the earth's physical features as well as the distribution of plants, animals and humans. Geographers use techniques such as observation, surveying, analysis and mapping. They study and describe many details: natural structures such as mountains; human structures such as cities; natural divisions such as oceans; political divisions such as counties; human activities. And they learn how all of these things relate to one another. We have designed this interactive, multimedia program to be an introduction to the Geography of Ohio. No single source, however, will tell you everything that you might want to know about Ohio's geography, and this program is no exception. Therefore, you may want to consult some other sources after using this program. This is especially true if you are writing a paper or report, or if you are preparing for a talk. The web links and books listed below have been used extensively in preparing this program. If you want to look further into the wonderful world of geography, you will find a great deal of useful data and information in these resources.

Facts (1995)
Ohio's streams flow into Lake Erie to the north, and the Ohio River to the south and southeast. There are more than 400 miles of waterways along Ohio's southern border that can be used by commercial boats. Ohio has 45 watersheds. Ohio has eight Lake Erie Ports. Ohio has more than 3,300 named rivers and streams and an equally large number of smaller unnamed branches. Today, there are above 60,000 lakes, reservoirs, and ponds in Ohio. Lake Erie and The Lake Erie Drainage The Lake Erie shoreline makes Ohio part of the largest fresh water navigation system in the world, the Great Lakes. Today, the Great Lakes connect Ohio to the Atlantic Ocean and world markets by way of the St. Lawrence Seaway. One hundred years ago, the connection was by way of Lake Erie and the Erie Canal, which connects Lake Erie with the Hudson River and New York City's harbor. About one-fourth of Ohio's surface area drains to Lake Erie. Thirteen of the state's major streams and rivers flow directly into Lake Erie.
Ohio River and its Tributaries About three-fourths of Ohio's surface area is part of the Ohio River drainage system. Thirty-one of the state's major streams and rivers flow directly into the Ohio River.

The State Climatology Office for Ohio
The State Climatology Office for Ohio strives to acquire, archive, process and disseminate all climate and weather information that is of value to public officials and organizations, corporations, research scientists, and private citizens of the state. The fact that there is a state climatology office is not widely known around Ohio and many of the requests are either from central Ohio or they are from other states, from persons that know of climate services in their home state. People come to this website because they are interested in finding Ohio climate data. The following web links will hopefully help you find such information. Many have free information but invariably the detailed and specific data needs that most people have will be available for a fee. Climate data is increasingly only available at cost, so appreciate the free sites listed in the second group.
    Major Climate Data Repositories
    • National Climatic Data Center . A wide variety of data can be purchased from the NCDC. It is the ONLY source for climate data admissible in court for legal cases. One of the most often requested forms of surface climate data available is:
Daily Local Climatological Data since 1996 for over 300 stations nationally and containing temperature, humidity, wind speed, cloud cover and significant weather data, both daily and for certain periods of the day. Other types of data are also available from the same Local Climatological Data web link.
