The opossums Last Update 10/20/02 Facts, Not Fiction! Is it true, Baby opossumsride mother's back? Well, judge for yourself. Night of Tator's final release.

The Opossums Last Update - 10/20/02 Facts, Not Fiction! Often called a "Possum", originally found in southeastern U.S., the Opossum has migrated north and westwards to Wisconsin, Colorado and Texas, and has even appeared in some Pacific Coast areas.
The only marsupial in North America, the Opossum suckles its young in a maternal pouch (as the Kangaroo and Koala Bear do). Two weeks after the parents mate, about 25 honeybee-sized babies are born. These young must drag themselves across two to three inches of abdominal fur to reach the warmth, nourishment and security of their mother's pouch. It's a matter of first come, first served. Those who reach one of the thirteen or so life-giving nipples clamp on tenaciously. About two months later, the eight or nine surviving young start to emerge. Mouse-sized, they will travel on their mother's back . . beady-eyed, gray-fluffed babies hanging on to her fur and rat-like tail for dear life.
At about four months of age, having learned the ways of survival from their mother, the young leave to seek their fortunes elsewhere. Using their scaly, prehensile tails for hanging and balancing, sharp claws, long fingers and almost thumblike rear toes for holding, these solitary, nocturnal tree-climbers will find enough insects, carrion, grains, seeds and fruit to survive.
Preyed upon by many larger animals, the Opossum has meager means of defense. If caught in the open, he has no alternative but to "play possum", rolling on his side and appearing dead. This very convincing death act (the animal's heart beat and respiration actually diminish) almost always serves the purpose of diverting danger. Once safe, this creature suddenly revives and gets on with his business.

Order Didelphimorphia The opossums are a diverse group of marsupials found in South America with one species, the Virginia opossum, being located in North America (US and Canada). Opossums are about the size of a cat or smaller. They have long, sparsely-haired tails that are typically scaled and prehensile. Most species have pouches. All the toes except for the first one on each hind foot are clawed. The first toe, known as the hallux, lacks a claw and instead has a nail. This toe is partially opposable. Opossums are typically arboreal in nature with one species actually being aquatic. Opossums can be found in thorn scrub, grassland, tropical forests, and urban areas. They are primarily insectivorous or omnivorous in nature. There are 60 species in 1 family: Didelphidae (opossums) 60 spp Back Home

Order Paucituberculata This small order of marsupials contains five species collectively known as rat opossums. Rat opossums are shrew-like in appearance, and contain many oddities in the marsupial world. For example, the females lack a pouch, sharing this feature with one other marsupial: the numbat. Another oddity is found in the males, as their sperm is paired. This feature is also found in some of the didelphids. No Australian marsupial shares this trait. Rat opossums are gray-brown in colour, with small eyes and a non-prehensile tail. They feed primarily on insects. Rat opossums are found in the forests of the Andes and along the southern coast of Chile in western South America. There were once several families in this order, but most of them are now extinct. An example is family Argyrolagidae. Today, there are 5 living species in 1 family: Caenolestidae (rat opossums) 5 spp Back Home

MARSUPIALIA Family DIDELPHIDAE
American Opossums
Geographic Distribution The vernacular name opossum generally applies to members of this family, which now is found only in the New World. The term possum is used mainly for members of certain marsupial in the Australasian region. The family Didelphidae, containing 11 Recent genera and 77 species, is found naturally from southeastern Canada through the eastern United States and Mexico and into South America to about 47 degrees S in Argentina. Opossums also occur on some of the islands in the Lesser Antilles. Kirsch 1977c) proposed recognition of two living subfamilies: Didelphinae for most genera and Caluromyinae for Caluromys, Caluromysiops, and Glironia . The sequence of genera presented here follows that of Kirsch and Calaby The members of this family are small to medium in size. For Marmosa , which includes the smallest species, adult head and body length is about 85-185 mm and tail length is 90-250 mm. In

Some forms are pale gray or otherwise not well marked, but woolly opossums usually have an ornate color pattern, including the diagnostic dark median stripe on the face, which extends between the ears and the eyes almost to the nose. Some individuals show a pale stripe extending backward from the shoulder region. The ornate color pattern may also include indistinct dark patches around the eyes, a light creamy white to buffy white face, and a reddish and blackish body. Opossums are preyed on by just about every carnivore. Among their chief predators are foxes, owls and coyotes, but many are killed by automobiles. They are very slow runners. In some parts of the country, they are even killed for their meat and fur. These are placid animals and when confronted or threatened will usually try to escape up the nearest tree. With their prehensile tails and opposable "thumbs" on their hind feet, opossums are capable tree climbers. When cornered, an opossum will gape, hiss, and display its very sharp teeth (all 50 of them). When an opossum is under a great deal of stress, it will sometimes fall into an involuntarily catatonic shock-like state, termed as "playing possum." It is important to remember this fact when attempting to pick up a "dead" opossum! One unique feature is distinguished by their form of reproduction. Opossums belong to the marsupial (animals with pouches; e.g., kangaroos) family. The young are born in almost an embryonic form and must find their way to the mother's pouch where they attach themselves to a nipple for the rest of their gestation period (about 50 days). Litters average about 8 but can be as large as 13. At about three months of age, when the young are fully weaned, the young will become independent of the mother. Living With Opossums Opossums are scavengers and usually do more good than harm. We advise tolerance. However, opossums will sometimes den in an attic or under a building where they are unwanted. If this happens:

M. Domesticus - Short-Tailed Opossums
The Perfect Pet ...by Vikki Fox
These sweet little animals are very friendly and easily tamed. They are not rodents and will not gnaw on things. They do not bite. They are very clean animals. Their cages do not smell and only have to be cleaned once a week. They don't take up much space (10 gallon tanks work great)! They can easily be litter box trained. They are low maintenance animals. They have soft fur - similar to a rabbits. They are very unusual and entertaining to watch. In my opinion this is by far the perfect pet and I have many other animals to compare them to. They are great for children. My 3 year old son loves his "little possum girl". If they sound good to you read on to find out more. M. Domesticus in their natural habitat are found in Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. They are considered good luck for a home by the tribal villagers in these areas because they eat insects, small rodents, and even scorpions. There are many other types of small opossums in South America but this is the species that has been most widely used for research over the past few decades. These opossums range from 3 to 6.5 inches long with a tail that is 1.5 to 3 inches long. They weigh from 2 to 3 ounces. They are about the size of a miniature hamster or gerbil Males can grow up to 1/4 larger than females. Their tail is bare but their body has short, thick and sometimes wavy fur. The texture of their fur is soft and similar to a rabbits fur. Their coats are usually a medium colored gray, with a buff covered underbelly. Babies are born naked and pink.

Opossums Among Us! What Should I Do?
Nothing. Leave it alone. WHAT ARE OPOSSUMS? Opossums are cat sized marsupials. Like the kangaroo, their young are born as embryos and make their way to a pouch on the stomach where they continue to develop. When they are four or five inches long they start leaving the pouch to ride on the mothers' back. When they have reached seven to eight inches body length, they leave the parent to make their own way in the world. Opossums are nocturnal, roaming at night, and looking for a dark, secluded place to sleep during the daylight hours. They are scavengers, and eat anything. Since opossums are quiet, and rarely cause damage, most people are unaware they are around. Like all scavengers they sometimes predate on smaller mammals, birds or reptiles. Pet food left out at night often attracts them to our yards. They benefit us by eating mice, rats, snails, slugs and insects. HOW CAN I PREVENT INVITING A PROBLEM WITH OPOSSUMS?
  • Pick up pet food at night.
  • Cover garbage cans tightly.
  • Keep fallen fruit picked up.

ACTIVE: Night time, year-round
DIET: Carrion, insects, fruit, garden crops The only North American marsupial, these shy, non-aggressive creatures will go to great lengths to avoid confrontations with other animals or man. However, if cornered, these creatures do have many teeth and, as with any wild animal, they may bite, The benefits of opossums far outweigh the problems they cause; but because of their high visibility in our neighborhoods a little knowledge about them may result in greater tolerance of these little nomads. When the young opossums are born, they are little more than embryos. After birth, they crawl into the mother's pouch where they nurse and mature for about 10 weeks, They become independent of the mother at about 3 months of age. Many common opossum sightings involve the mother opossum waddling along with 10 or 12 furry little creatures attached to her. Often the babies fall off, accounting for many "orphans" brought to wildlife rehabbers. Even more frequent sightings involve opossums n roads, having been hit by cars. Concerned citizens are urged to check the dead opossum. If female, there may still living babies inside the pouch. Thousands of baby opossums have been saved by those attentive citizens who have transported the dead mother with her living babies still attached, to the nearest wildlife rehabilitation center. Opossums are perhaps the most fascinating of all the wildlife in our area and are an important and beneficial part of the "wildlife scene".

Opossum Florida's only marsupial is the Virginia opossum ( Didelphis virginiana ). Opossums are about the size of a house cat, have long naked tails and small ears. Opossums occur throughout the state in virtually all habitats. If threatened they may go limp and appear dead, hence "playing possum". Opossums are common in residential and suburban areas, and are most active at night. Opossums are attracted to virtually any type of available food, including garbage, pet food, or cultivated fruits and vegetables. To prevent attraction of opossums garbage cans should be secured with rubber straps, and pet food should be taken in at night. A landowner may lawfully live-trap nuisance opossums using sardines or cat food as effective bait. Wildlife may not be lawfully relocated without an FWC permit and permission from the private property owner. Wildlife may not be lawfully relocated to public land. Relocating wildlife is seldom biologically sound, the animal often does not survive.

  • Females have litters of up to 20. Babies' eyes open in 58-72 days, they wean at 13-15 weeks and their body temperature is 90-99 degrees. Opossums are very necessary animals to our environment. They are scavengers and help keep the earth clean. Opossums are marsupials….they do not have placentas but develop their young in a pouch like a kangaroo or Tasmanian devil! They later carry their juvenile opossums on their backs wherever they go. Opossums are the only marsupials in North America. Always check a dead opossum for babies. Just because the mother is dead doesn’t mean the babies are! But they will be if you don’t check. If there are babies in the pouch, try to pull the babies off the mother, if you can’t, transport the mother and babies to the nearest rehabilitator. If baby opossums are at least 10-12 inches long, they are able to be on their own unless you see that they are sick or injured. Treat an opossum like a raccoon when it comes to one being a pest.
