The Bugout TM Pet Feeding System was developed by John and Jennifer Newman, themselves pet owners, as an answer to the problem of crawling insects invading pet food. Any pet be it dogs, cats, ferrets, potbellied pigs, that eats off the ground can be impacted by this problem. The Problem
An increasing number of families leave their pets alone for the day while at work. Serious dehydration can occur if pets are not given enough water. Evaporation, stagnation of water and growth of algae in the water are of concern to pet owners. Self watering devices are one answer to this concern. Crawling insect contamination to pet food is another concern. The use of ant traps or spraying of insecticides or pesticides is risky to pets and humans. Moat type dishes without detergents or soap are the only type of pest control recognized as safe ...and our product is designed as such!

(plus $6.95 S/H) Features a secure delivery system which provides a continuous flow of water giving the pet drinking water and forms a moat area around the removable feeding dish. Insects won't cross the moat! Is a revolutionary patented pet feeding system that eliminates the problem of crawling insects invading your pet's food. It features a secure water delivery system using a refillable 2 liter bottle. 7" Pet Feeding System
4" Pet Feeding System
The high back design keeps the bottle from being easily knocked out of the dish by the pet. A continuous flow of water gives the pet drinking water and forms the "moat" area around the removable dish. The quality molded plastic, all-in-one design takes up less floor space, is less likely to tip over and spill and, is less likely to be tripped over than several individual bowls. The Bugout Pet Feeding System eliminates the need for pesticides in your pet's feeding area as the water acts as a barrier between insects and your pet's food. This product is designed for dogs, cats, ferrets, potbellied pigs, and other small animals.

Caring for Miniature Potbellied Pigs
Currently more than 8,000 miniature potbellied pigs are kept as pets in the United States-and the number is growing. These pigs are descendants of wild boars that were first domesticated in the Pearl River area in China. The most commonly known miniature pig is the Vietnamese potbellied pig; but an additional 16 varieties also exist, including the Yucatan pig (i.e., Mexican hairless) and the African pigmy. Because they can cost up to $5000 and generally live between 12 and 15 years, their intrinsic value and potential as long-term pets are considerable. Here are some basic guidelines to help care for these increasingly popular household pets:
General Information:
Potbellied pigs can live to be 20 to 25 years of age.
They should have a maximum height of 18 inches at the shoulder and a maximum weight of 95 pounds; however, miniature pigs that weigh 150 or more pounds are common. The normal body temperature for a potbellied pig is 101 to 103 F o
Respiration rate ranges between 15 and 40 breaths per minute.
The heart rate varies from 70 to 100 beats per minute.

Medical Issues by Life Stage
1st state: birth
I. Potbellied Pigs generally don't have as many problems as other animals. They do better when compared to dogs, goats, horses and other animals. There is a difference between congenital and genetic defects: Congenital defects - Present at birth and does not have to be genetic. Genetic defects - Caused by breeding II. If a baby is born deformed, it is usually to be genetic. This is not always the case. There is not enough information to prove one way or another. III. Important conditions which are correctable:
  • High degree of hernias (abdomen to the outside connects with nerves to the outside). When the piglet is born, the opening to the abdomen is suppose to be closed. In pigs, the ring isn't totally closed, and the structures (intestines) from the inside will come out. The theory is that there may be an incomplete closure, and it doesn't close until 4-5 months of age. If the pig is neutered, a hernia will occur. There are problems with people handling potbellied pigs like farm pigs. i.e. prolapse. In general: Have the pig neutered to prevent problems. Castration is too traumatic for pet pigs. Cryptorchidism - One or two testicles missing. This means the ring closed before the testicle had the chance to go outside. If a pig has one, it can breed, but cryptorchidism is a genetic situation. In the long run, there is proof that testicles that don't come out can turn into cancer. There are ethics involved. If you sell a pig that is cryptorchid pig, it will show up later.

NAPPA endorses the following CODE OF ETHICS pertaining to the care and adoption of potbellied pigs. The points listed are vitally necessary for the health and welfare of adoptive potbellied pigs. These standards also help to ensure that the adopting family gets off to the best possible start with their new pig.

I will maintain a potbellied pig as a house pet so that I can experience first hand the care, feeding, housing, training and veterinary care necessary to properly care for a potbelly. I will make an effort to be involved in community service, such as visiting nursing homes and schools with a pig. I will explain to the prospective pig parent the physical and behavior characteristics of a pet pig so they can realistically determine if this is a pet appropriate to their life style and expectations.

    Scientific Reports: Original Study
Objective - To determine resting rectal temperatures of Vietnamese potbellied pigs. Design - Prospective clinical trial. Procedure - Rectal temperatures of the potbellied pigs on a farm were measured during the morning, afternoon, and evening. Rectal temperatures at the time of initial examination were obtained from medical records for the potbellied pigs examined at the hospital. Results - Mean rectal temperatures for both groups of potbellied pigs were the same. Overall unadjusted mean +/- SD rectal temperature was 37.6 +/- 0.8C (99.7 +/- 1.5F; range, 35.1 to 39.6 C [95.2 to 103.3 F] ). However, diurnal variation in rectal temperature was found among the farm population of potbellied pigs. After adjustment for age and repeated sampling, rectal temperatures recorded during the morning were found to be significantly lower than temperatures recorded during the evening (mean difference, 0.4C [0.7F] ). There was a significant inverse linear relationship between age and rectal temperature.

    40. Potbellied Pigs As Your New Pet
potbellied pigs...... One of the most difficult challenges is finding a veterinarian that can care forthese Title potbellied pigs as your new pet
    http://idid.essortment.com/potbelliedpigs_rkyx.htm
Potbellied pigs as your new pet
The fad of the miniature potbellied pig first became evident in the eighties. It has continued to surface even today. Many potbellied pigs are sold as piglets and people think they are very cute and adorable. What they don’t realize is these piglets can and will grow up to ninety pounds. You might wonder why these pigs are called minature. When you compare them to other pigs, they are smaller than the average pig you see on many farms. So with this in mind this fad of owning a potbellied pig has diminshed a bit. They are still popular pets among individuals who prefer to have unique pets. bodyOffer(31311) One thing to consider before you buy a miniature potbellied pig is where you live. These are not apartment animals. A pig also should spend some of its time outdoors. They will not be happy if they are enclosed indoors all their life. Another thing to consider is the zoning laws in your neighborhood. Some areas still consider this animal to be a farm animal and are not permitted in cities or suburban neighborhoods. In some states, owners may be allowed to keep a potbellied pig as a pet, if they produce a state health certificate. It is extremely important to look into this closely so the situation does not arise after you have gotten attached to the animal. There may be fines if you don’t do things properly. The easiest place to find a potbellied pig is through a breeder. Pet stores rarely sell them. A breeder also gives you the advantage of seeing other pigs and how the potbellied pig interacts with its siblings. When choosing a potbellied pig you want to make sure the animal appears healthy, has eyes that are bright and free of rashes.
