Introduction
The Renaissance started in Italy and slowly spread throughout Europe. The church was still a major political, social and economic power as well as a primary patron of the arts, although it suffered some dark days during the Reformation. An emerging middle class began to question the old foundations and education became more available as a result of the printing press. Individual achievement, scientific inquiry and new wealth set the stage for the Renaissance to match and even surpass Classical Greece and Rome. Renaissance Artistic innovations include: oil painting, perspective as a science, aerial perspective, non religious art, sfumato, chiaroscuro, clothed nude, tremendous detail, foreshortening, child-like children, and a return to landscapes and portraits. To expand search, see Art and The Renaissance . Laterally related topics: Symmetry Perspective Fractals in Art Weaving ... Origami , and Mazes The Mathematics and the Liberal Arts pages are intended to be a resource for student research projects and for teachers interested in using the history of mathematics in their courses. Many pages focus on ethnomathematics and in the connections between mathematics and other disciplines. The notes in these pages are intended as much to evoke ideas as to indicate what the books and articles are about. They are not intended as reviews. However, some items have been reviewed in Mathematical Reviews , published by The American Mathematical Society. When the mathematical review (MR) number and reviewer are known to the author of these pages, they are given as part of the bibliographic citation. Subscribing institutions can access the more recent MR reviews online through MathSciNet Swetz, Frank J. Seeking Relevance? Try the History of Mathematics. Mathematics Teacher Focuses on how the history of mathematics can be used to improve mathematics education. It can not only breath new life into the subject, but also allow students to better understand mathematics as a mode of inquiry. If students see mathematical ideas in other times [and in other cultures], they can appreciate the ideas better in our own. Swetz gives examples from the development of algorithms for arithmetic (including square roots). Ancient demonstrations of mathematical ideas, such as the "husan-thu" proof of the Pythagorean theorem from China can be conceptually more suitable for students than more synthetic modern ones. Ancient "homework problems" from Babylonia, China, and Medieval Italy can be more interesting than the more dry and formulaic modern equivalents. (See Swetz

Early 15th Century Renaissance
The spirit of the Italian Renaissance was strongest in Florence in the early 15th century. Florence took cultural command of Italy, which it held until the end of the century when the power then shifted to Rome. One Italian family, the Medici, bankers to all Europe, were such generous patrons of the arts that it has been said they "financed" the Renaissance. To this day the name "Medici" means a generous patron of the arts. Use the Early 15th Century Renaissance links and Renaissance - overall links to answer the following questions. Activities:
  • These following three artists had very different personalities and styles. After reviewing their art and/or biographies, write a short paragraph describing the one you find most interesting and why:
    • Brunelleschi (architect)
    • Donatello (sculptor)
    • Masaccio (painter)
  • Much of the painting of the early renaissance was done in fresco or egg tempera. Do you think these media were more difficult than oil painting of today? Write a short paragraph describing both techniques and artists who worked in the medium.
  • What artwork from this period do you think best exhibits the "humanistic" philosophy of the Renaissance?

In Italy, during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, many brilliant artists were making great contributions to art. In 1550, Giorgio Vasari decided to write about these artists and published a book, Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors and Architects. He became the first art historian. His term for this period was the French form of the word, rebirth, and it is still known as the Renaissance. T his image (created by Steve McIntosh and Chuck Thurston) is entitled Divine Proportion . The image consists of a crop circle (which appeared next to Stonehenge in southwest England in the summer of 1996) in the shape of a ãGolden Spiral-Julia Set fractal,ä superimposed on clouds. The shape of the spiral is derived from the Golden Mean (also known as the ãDivine Proportionä), which is the heart of sacred geometry. The circles forming the spiral also reveal a fractal pattern known as a Julia Set. The clouds and colors were added to suggest the preexistent, spiritual nature of the fractal and sacred geometric forms which make up this unique crop circle

This map indicates the location of London's playhouses between the years 1574-1642. Near the top of the map you may find Red Bull (1605) on St. Johns Street, Fortune (1600) off of Golding Lane, Theater (1576) and Curtain (1577) off of Shoreditch. On the other side of the Thames River, you can see the Swan (1595), Hope (1614), Rose (1587), and Globe (1599) theaters. This image is a portion of the Agas map of London (the sketches for which were made between 1569 and 1590, then printed in 1631). You can see the bull- and bear-baiting rings that scholars believe were possible prototypes for the three-tiered, unroofed theater buildings. Other scholars believe that plays took place in these arenas merely by setting up removable booth stages in the arena. We have our knowledge of these theaters from drawings and maps of this period, but also from recent discoveries, such as the excavations of The Rose and a small portion of The Globe in 1989. The Rose excavations show that the theater was polygonal in shape (probably with 14 sides), had an outside diameter of approximately 72 feet, and an interior yard diameter of apporximately 49' 2''. This yard was sloped toward the stage.
