Biological information on the more than 600 amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles regularly found in California.

CALIFORNIA’S WILDLIFE Amphibians Birds Mammals Reptiles The species notes in “California’s Wildlife” provide biological information for each regularly-occurring amphibian, reptile, mammal and bird in California. The following web pages represent updated versions of the species accounts in the three-volume set “California’s Wildlife” edited by Zeiner, D.C. et al 1988-1990. It also contains 29 more accounts than the original publication, bringing the total up to 675. The species notes were prepared under contract with the best available experts for various taxonomic groups. Authors and reviewers names appear on the individual accounts. Accounts were initially edited by Marshall White and, in later years, by California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR) Program staff with the California Department of Fish and Game. The species notes were designed to support the computerized species-habitat relationships database models in the CWHR System. The system is continually being revised. Users are encouraged to submit corrections and additional information to:

http://museum.nhm.uga.edu/gawildlife/reptiles/squamata/lacertilia.html
Phylum: Chordata
Subphylum: Vertebrata
Class: Reptilia
Order: squamata The Suborder Lacertilia is well represented in Georgia, with 6 families, 10 genera, and 16 species. Most of these have the "typical" lizard body form: small animals with four legs and a tail as long as or longer than the body. However, members of one family have lost their limbs and are often mistaken for snakes. Most lizards have external ear openings and moveable eyelids. The Family Anguidae . This family is represented in Georgia by four species of Glass Lizards. These lizards look like snakes at first glance, but they have external ear openings and moveable eyelids and snakes do not. Their tails are very long and will break off quite easily if not handled carefully. That is how they got their common name. Members of this family have bones ( osteoderms ) in their scales, which make the body stiff. A groove along the side of the body allows it to expand when it becomes distended with food or eggs. The Family Gekkonidae . This family is not native to Georgia, but one species has become established by accidental introduction. This large family is found on all continents in temperate and tropical climates. Most Geckos are

34. Georgia Wildlife Web Site; Reptiles
Some reptiles such as small lizards (Anoles and Skinks) or small snakes (RingneckSnakes or Earth Snakes) have adapted to Search Georgia wildlife Web site.
http://museum.nhm.uga.edu/gawildlife/reptiles/reptiles.html
The name "reptile" is generally applied to any of a group of cold-blooded vertebrates that move on their bellies (like snakes) or by means of small, short legs (like turtles). In zoology, the name means an individual in the Class Reptilia. Some reptiles (such as lizards) look superficially similar to some amphibians (such as salamanders). However, reptiles are dry-skinned, not slimy. They are covered in scales or a shell. If they have legs, they have claws on their toes. Saying that reptiles are "cold-blooded" means that they cannot generate their own body heat. reptiles must regulate their body temperature by behavior, either by basking in the sun to warm themselves or by hiding under cover to keep cool. reptiles can range far from water sources because their skins retain water better than amphibian skin does. Reptile eggs also have a leathery shell that prevents rapid water loss. reptiles reproduce by internal fertilization during mating. They have two modes of bringing their young into the world. All crocodilians, turtles, most lizards and some snakes lay eggs. A few lizard species and some snakes give birth to live young. Whether hatched from eggs or born live, young reptiles look basically like the adult (although some may have a different body color or pattern). The Class Reptilia is composed of four orders. Species from three of these orders occur in North America: Order

A Guide to Amphibians and reptiles of Costa Rica by Twan Leenders Zona Though itincludes far more species than Beletsky's Costa Rica wildlife guide, it is
http://www.wildherps.com/references.html
This is a partial list of the reference materials that I've used to identify wild herps or just learn more about them. It's not a particularly well-balanced or representative list, as it is heavily biased towards parts of the world that I have personally visited.
But first, you should check out Ellin Beltz's site that explains the meanings of the scientific names of North American amphibians and reptiles, because it is so cool. Then you can read more about names at the bottom of this page Handbook of Reptiles and Amphibians of Florida, Part One: The Snakes, Second Edition
by Ray E. Ashton, Jr. and Patricia Sawyer Ashton
Windward Publishing Inc, Miami, FL, 1988 This is a useful and well-researched field guide. Each species is illustrated with one or more color photos mixed in with the text, and a range map by Florida county as well as a smaller map showing the entire range in the U.S. The text is informative but a little dry. An uninspired layout makes it a little harder to find what you're looking for than it should be. Overall a good to very good field guide, but Tennant's newer one is even better.
