Geographical Features: In North America the territory of the Lakota, Nakota and Dakota Nation covers some 200,000 km² in the present day state of South Dakota and neighbouring states. Population: The Lakota, Nakota and Dakota Nation (also known as the Great Sioux Nation) descends from of the original inhabitants of North America and can be divided into three major linguistic and geographic groups: Lakota (Teton, West Dakota), Nakota (Yankton, Central Dakota) and Dakota (Santee, Eastern Dakota). The total number of native North Americans is approximately 1,5 million, of which around 100,000 are Lakota.
They reside near the Sacred Black Hills of South Dakota. Economy: Traditionally, the Lakota hunted buffalo. Today, the economy is based on agriculture, cattle, sheep ranches, fishing and tourism. Natural resources are gold, silver, oil, ore and shale. The country’s largest gold mine is in the Black Hills, which is being mined against the wishes of the indigenous Lakota. Brief History:
  • The US signed the First First Laramie Treaty with several indigenous Nations, which formally recognised the Lakota as being entitled to a huge tract upon their sacred land and that Indians were an independent political community which possess sovereignty. Despite the Treaty, the clash between the Lakota people and the invaders continued.

It goes without saying that doing Native American Research is difficult. Over the long history of the settlement of this country many records were either never created or were lost in the shuffle of time. Here are a few good sites that may help your research. Make sure you do your homework and try to have names, dates, or tribal names on hand. There are several query sites available but the more information you provide, the easier it is to find an answer to your query. Nebraska, South Dakota and Kansas share some of the Sioux Nation along with many other various tribes and families. Try to know for sure which tribe and area you are researching in.

Subject Area: Social Studies Grade Level: Grades 3-5 Topic(s): Native Americans Purpose(s) of Lesson: Students will learn about four tribes of Indians who lived across the United States: the Iroquois, Pueblos, Seminoles, and the Sioux. Students will use the Internet to search for facts about these four tribes. Students will create a four-page flipbook about the tribe of their choice. Materials Needed: Internet, computer, United States map, and paper Time Required: Two weeks Procedure: Introduce the lesson by showing the students where the following states are located: South Dakota, Arizona, Florida, and New York. Have the following resources available for students to use: encyclopedias, atlases, social studies book, and computer with Internet. Divide the class into four teams and have them research the common crops and climate of the four states and report their findings to the class. Conduct a brain-storming session about how they think Native American tribes in these areas might have differed or been the same.

JOSEPH BRANT (THAYENDANEGEA)
Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea), Mohawk Chief and friend of the British, 1742-1807. Joseph Brant was educated at Eleazar Wheelocks Indian School. He was a member of the Church of English and translated the Book of Common Prayer and parts of the New Testiment into the Mohawk language. Joseph Brant aided the British in the French and Indian War and the wars against the Ottawa Chieftain Pontiac. Following the American Revolution, Joseph Brant lead his people to Canada and settled on a reservation north of Lake Erie and Ontario. This reservation is located in what's now called Brantford, Ontario.
POCAHONTAS
Pocahontas, (1595?-1617), was the daughter of the Indian chief Powhatan. She is said to have saved the life of Captain John Smith. It is unconfirmed whether this event took place. Her real name was Matoaka. In 1613, Capt. Samuel Argall took Pocahontas to Jamestown as a hostage. He hoped to use Pocahontas to negotiate peace between Powhatan and the Virginians. While in Jamestown, she converted to Christianity and took the name Rebecca. She met John Rolfe and in 1614 were married. In 1615, Rolfes' only child, Thomas, was born. The next year, they sailed to England for a visit. During this time, Pocahontas renewed her acquaintance with Capt. Smith. In 1617, prior to Rolfes return to Jamestown, Pocahontas contracted smallpox and died in Gravesend, England. - info from Compton's Encyclopedia.

INTRODUCTION We believe that the original inhabitants of North America arrived thousands of years ago. Many names have been used to describe these people. We will refer to them as Native Americans or Indians. During the last several hundred years, these Native Americans have suffered many hard times, often, unfortunately, when coming into contact with the "newly" arrived European Immigrants. As you explore the various activities included in this webquest, try to get a sense of where the Indians were in their beliefs, what caused differences in their lifestyles, how important the earth and nature were to them, and their interactions with other groups of people.
YOUR TASK
During your Native American study you will explore various areas of the Indian culture from the past.
