TuTh 1:45-3:30 O’Connor Instructor: : O’Connor 304 Office Hours : LNichols@scu.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION: Welcome to this course on Social Stratification. Stratification is one of the oldest areas of study in sociology and its study fits well with the definition of sociology as taught here at Santa Clara University: " Sociology is a social science that uses quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the relationship among individual actions, social institutions, societal forces, and social change. Sociological understanding provides us with tools for analyzing the practical impact and ethical implications of our choices and decisions in the workplace, family, and community ." Some of the earliest sociologists focused on trying to understand and predict the systematic causes and consequences of stratification as societies were moving from being primarily agrarian to being industrialized. This information will prove useful as we begin to look at what stratification looks like in the 21 st century. Although the course will primarily focus on the United States, we will also spend some time exploring stratification from a global perspective.
