At the beginning of the seventeenth century opera evolved from a courtly and scholarly activity to a popular entertainment, in part, because of its use technology for the creation of scenic spectacle.

    Introduction
In 1993, when I first began to research theatre sites on the internet, it was a difficult and laborious project. Sites were hard to find, search engines were underdeveloped, there were very few theatre people who had taken an interest in, or even knew about the internet. Obviously, things have changed. Now the World Wide Web is easily accessible through a variety of web browsers, making specific knowledge of such utilities as telnet, ftp, and gopher more or less obsolete. There are now so many theatre-related sites that keeping a truly comprehensive guide to resources theatre on the internet, compiled and maintained through human intervention, is incredibly time-consuming. The area of performance studies is even more of a problem, with its incursions into popular culture, communication studies, and hundreds of other (legitimate!) tangents.

It's a fitting location: The Pantages has become one of the greatest landmarks of Hollywood, signifying both the glorious past and adventuresome future of the world's entertainment capital.
T he Pantages has a history as grand and diverse as the stage and screen fare which audiences have flocked to enjoy there for half a century. These days it's one of Los Angeles' leading homes of legitimate theatre (the five highest-grossing weeks in L.A.'s theatrical history were all shows at the Pantages) and a favorite "location" for tv shows, movies and music videos. In the past, it has been a movie house, with live vaudeville acts between features as well as the site of many gala premieres and "spectaculars." For ten years the Pantages Theatre was the home of the glittering Academy Awards Presentations.
T he Pantages Theatre came to life on June 4, 1930, opened by the great impresario, Alexander Pantages as part of the Fox Theatre chain. The opening bill was mixed: MGM's

Griffith, who came to America as a penniless boy from Glamorganshire, South Wales and made his fortune in gold mining speculation, settled in Los Angeles. Griffith purchased the Los Feliz Rancho, four thousand acres of fine land northeast of the city and settled into the life of a farmer and family man, growing ever fonder of his adopted town. It was during this period that he wrote "Sometimes I ask myself, what have I done to perpetuate the prosperity of my city?" D uring Christmas week of 1896, Griffith appeared before the Los Angeles City Council to make a present to the city three thousand acres of his Los Feliz Rancho to be used as a park. The enormous gift, equal to five square miles, was to be given to the city unconditionally or almost so. "It must be made a place of recreation and rest for the masses, a resort for the rank and file, for the plain people," he said. "I consider it my obligation to make Los Angeles a happier, cleaner and finer city. I wish to pay my debt of duty in this way to the community in which I have prospered. T he land remained in its natural state for 16 years, a public park without rival in the world. But still, Griffith was not satisfied that he had fully "paid [his] debt of duty," and, accordingly, he reappeared before the City Council in 1912, again during Christmas week, with another gift in hand $100,000 for the construction of an observatory within the park. It was an idea whose time had not yet come, however, and the Council declined Griffith's offer. When he died in 1919, it was discovered that his will contained instructions to set up a trust fund of $1,000,000 for the construction of the observatory and also for a Greek Theatre, where residents of the city he loved, could come for the best entertainment in the world.

    American Theatre web sites
I created this web site last year and it needs some updating. The caveats to the title are below, but mostly these are the sites I have found to be image-rich and harder to find with a simple seach.
For my use, I'm primarily interested in sites with images, since I mostly use these sites for visual aids in my Theatre History classes. There are many images from these pages I use to show my students what these theatres/performers/programs/etc. looked like. My hope is that my reviews will help people to avoid looking at sites they don't need. There are, of course, many sites on playwrights and American Theatre companies, most of which can be found with a simple Yahoo! search. I've decided not to include links to specific historic theatres, since they can be found either through a search or through the first site on this list. My one exception to that is the Chestnut Street Theatre site, since it's so extensive and includes a virtual tour. I also have not included popular theatre sites unless they can't be found through John Frick's very excellent site. As always, suggestions/corrections are appreciated.

Designed by renowned San Francisco architect Timothy L. Pflueger and completed in late 1931, it was one of the first Depression-era buildings to incorporate and integrate the work of numerous creative artists into its architecture and is particularly noteworthy for its successful orchestration of the various artistic disciplines into an original and harmonious whole.
Construction was initiated by Publix Theatres, the exhibiting organization of Paramount Pictures. Although financial difficulties forced the sale of the uncompleted building to Fox-West Coast Theatres, the firm that completed the theatre and operated it until it closed on September 15, 1970, the name "Paramount" was retained.
After its initial brief blaze of "movie palace" glory in the 1930's, this remarkable auditorium suffered three decades of neglect and decline until its rescue by the Oakland Symphony, the City of Oakland and numerous private donors. The building was purchased by the Board of Directors of the Oakland Symphony Orchestra Association in 1972. A painstaking and

Even though there were already several other theatres in the Borough of Red Bank, New Jersey by the year 1925 (including the Strand, Palace, Empire and Lyric Theatres), on July 29, 1925 the Red Bank Register reported that Joseph Oschwald of Little Silver had announced plans to build a theatre on Monmouth Street for a partnership of Joseph Stern of Newark, the Burns and Schaffer Amusement Co., and Walter Reade. Joseph Stern was already operating the Tivoli, Central, Plaza, Savoy and Regent Theaters in Newark, the Castle Theater in Irvington, the Lincoln Theater in Bloomfield, the Capitol Theater in Belleville and the Grand and Casino Theaters in Kearney. Walter Reade, for whom the Walter Reade Theatre at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City is now named, was already New Jersey's largest theatre owner, with ownership or an interest in thirty-one other venues in the state.
Projected to open eight months later on April 1, 1926, the new theatre would have seating for about 2,000 persons and be equipped for moving pictures, vaudeville and dramatic shows. The ninety foot by one hundred and ten foot theatre would include a wide lobby on Monmouth Street flanked by two storefronts, and a stage entrance for scenery via a ten foot wide strip of land around the corner on Pearl Street. The noted theatre architect Thomas W. Lamb was reported to be drawing the plans for the new building, with an exterior of white terra cotta, and an interior finished in Old Gold and Red. The property and the rights of way for the land were purchased for $21,000, and the projected construction cost was $300,000 to $500,000.
