Truman, 33rd President of the United States, with a birthday luncheon attended by several hundred invited guests, including one of this country's prominent citizens selected by the organization to receive its annual "Good Neighbor Award" for exemplary service both to their community and to the nation.
The Birthday Luncheons had their genesis in 1953 when 21 of President Truman's friends, mostly businessmen of the area, held a birthday luncheon for him at Max Bretton's Restaurant in Kansas City. The luncheons became an annual event and at President Truman's passing in 1972, the core group, by then called the Eddie Jacobson Foundation in honor of one of its deceased founders, adopted the present name and incorporated as a not-for-profit educational foundation to conduct activities honoring the late president. These included continuation of the annual luncheons.
Much of the credit for the funding and success of these birthday events goes to the late Henry J. Talge, Kansas City businessman and philanthropist who operated the foundation until his death in 1990. By vote of the Foundation's membership, the annual luncheons continue in the format established by its major benefactor and reflect the interests of President Truman.

1920's
1930's 1940's 1950's ... 1990's December 31, 1945
The sweep of events in 1945 engulfed a whole era. The modern Dark Ages gave way to a period in which man had another of his historically rare and fragile chances to seek peace and ensue it. The Axis, an insane Atlantis which no Francis Bacon would ever mourn, was shattered and submerged. The men who had made that era perished with it, Benito Mussolini, Italy's self-styled Man of Destiny, dies ignominiously and was hung by his heels like a slaughtered pig alongside the body of his mistress. Adolf Hitler, Man of 1938, died by his own hand, also with his mistress, in the rubble of Berlin. Or did he die? Dead or alive, it did not much matter: Adolf Hitler, the force, had perished. More obliterating than death was the continued life of Hideki Tojo. But for the Battle of Midway, he would certainly have been the Man of 1942. His war had been the coldest and most calculating of all, his machinations the most arrogant, his nation's defeat the most ruinous. When he tried to commit suicide he failed again; at year's end he lived on, saved from death by U.S. blood, shunned by his countrymen, still able to read that U.S. strategists had decoded his every intention, that he had never really had a chance. Franklin Roosevelt, Man of 1932, 1934 and 1941, was dead, struck down with dramatic suddenness before he could witness the victory he had charted and planned. Had he lived, 1945 would have been his yearthe final flowering of American hope and strength which he had nurtured through black days made blacker by American indecision. But now he lay in a grave at Hyde Park, mourned by the world.

HARRY S. TRUMAN
(Portrait) President Truman was conscious of rivalry among US intelligence organizations both during and after World War II. He realized that reorganization was necessary and that a reorganization plan needed to be developed, from competing proposals, which would not exacerbate these rivalries. The following reflects President Truman's thinking on the subject prior to the establishment of the Central Intelligence Group in 1946 and ultimately of the Central Intelligence Agency in 1947.
"I CONSIDERED IT VERY important to this country to have a sound, well-organized intelligence system, both in the present and in the future. Properly developed, such a service would require new concepts as well as better trained and more competent personnel . . . it was imperative that we refrain from rushing into something that would produce harmful and unnecessary rivalries among the various intelligence agencies. I told Smith (Director of the Bureau of the Budget) that one thing was certainthis country wanted no Gestapo under any guise or for any reason." President Harry S. Truman

Statement to the Nation Delivered by President Harry S. Truman on July 4, 1945
Researched by James R. Heintze. American University, Washington, D.C.
Editor's note: Click here for a photograph of Truman. Again this year we celebrate July 4 as the anniversary of the day one hundred and sixty-nine years ago on which we declared our independence as a sovereign people. In this year of 1945, we have pride in the combined might of this nation which has contributed signally to the defeat of the enemy in Europe. We have confidence that, under Providence, we soon may crush the enemy in the Pacific. We have humility for the guidance that has been given us of God in serving His will as a leader of freedom for the world. This year, the men and women of our armed forces, and many civilians as well, are celebrating the anniversary of American Independence in other countries throughout the world. Citizens of these other lands will understand what we celebrate and why, for freedom is dear to the hearts of all men everywhere. In other lands, others will join us in honoring our declaration that all men are created equal and are endowed with certain inalienable rightslife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Here at home, on this July 4, 1945, let us honor our Nation's creed of liberty, and the men and women of our armed forces who are carrying this creed with them throughout the world.

diphtheria
Truman developed diphtheria in 1894 at age 10. He was paralyzed for several months and had to be wheeled around in a baby carriage. Diphtheria antitoxin was unavailable then, so he was treated with ipecac and whiskey. He developed a severe distaste for both. [
farsightedness
As a child, Truman was diagnosed with a rare eye problem, "flat eyeballs." He wore thick glasses beginning at age eight, after his mother noticed he was able to see the large print in the family Bible, but unable to see objects at a distance. It has been said that Truman was far-sighted (which fits with the flat eyeballs diagnosis) [ ], but this pattern of visual acuity is characteristic of near-sightedness.
