Biographical Sketch
HARRY S. TRUMAN
33rd President of the United States Harry S. Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri on May 8, 1884, the son of John Anderson Truman and Martha Ellen (Young) Truman. The family, which soon included another boy, Vivian, and a girl, Mary Jane moved several times during Truman's childhood and youth - first, in 1887, to a farm near Grandview, then, in 1890, to Independence, and finally, in 1902, to Kansas City. Young Harry attended public schools in Independence, graduating from high school in 1901. After leaving school, he worked briefly as a timekeeper for a railroad construction contractor, then as a clerk in two Kansas City banks. In 1906 he returned to Grandview to help his father run the family farm. He continued working as a farmer for more than ten years. From 1905 to 1911, Truman served in the Missouri National Guard. At the outbreak of World War I, he helped organize the 2nd Regiment of Missouri Field Artillery, which was quickly called into Federal service as the 129th Field Artillery and sent to France. Truman was promoted to Captain and given command of the regiment's Battery D. He and his unit saw action in the Vosges, Saint Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne campaigns. Truman joined the reserves after the war, rising eventually to the rank of colonel. He sought to return to active duty at the outbreak of World War II, but Army Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall declined his offer to serve.

Truman was born on a farm near Lamar, Mo., on May 8, 1884. During World War I, he served in France as a captain with the 129th Field Artillery. He married Bess Wallace in 1919. After engaging briefly and unsuccessfully in the haberdashery business in Kansas City, Mo., Truman entered local politics. Under the sponsorship of Thomas Pendergast, Democratic boss of Missouri, he held a number of local offices, preserving his personal honesty in the midst of a notoriously corrupt political machine. In 1934, he was elected to the Senate and was reelected in 1940. During his first term he was a loyal but quiet supporter of the New Deal, but in his second term, an appointment as head of a Senate committee to investigate war production brought out his special qualities of honesty, common sense, and hard work, and he won widespread respect. Elected vice president in 1944, Truman became president upon Roosevelt's sudden death in April 1945 and was immediately faced with the problems of winding down the war against the Axis and preparing the nation for postwar adjustment. Germany surrendered on May 8, and in July Truman attended the Potsdam Conference to discuss the settlement plans for postwar Europe. To end the war with Japan, he authorized the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug. 6 and Aug. 9, 1945. Japan surrendered on Aug. 14. Although the action undoubtedly saved many American lives by bringing the war to an end, the morality of the decision is still debated.

    PRESIDENT HARRY S TRUMAN
Harry Truman became president of the United States on April 12, 1945 upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. During Truman's presidency Germany surrendered (May 8, 1945) and Japan surrendered (Aug. 14, 1945), ending World War II. The U.S., with Truman's approval, dropped an atomic bomb on the people of Hiroshima on Aug. 6 and one on Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945. As more information has become available regarding the Japanese peace effort, the Japanese fear of losing their emperor (whom they believed was a god), and U.S. advisors who offered other methods of winning the war, the debate has grown over whether the atomic bombings were necessary to save lives and win the war (for example, see Hiroshima: Was it Necessary? Truman always staunchly defended the atomic bombings. Shortening the war, saving American lives, and revenge are the main reasons he gave for using them. In his first public explanation (Aug. 6, 1945, just after Hiroshima was a-bombed), he said: "The Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold."

    Missouri History
    Harry S Truman
    A 50th Anniversary
    Commemoration of
    His Presidency
by Robert H. Ferrell No Missourian, nor for that matter, any citizen of any of the 50 states, needs reminding that half a century ago a Missourian became president of the United States. But the passage of 50 years does give opportunity to reflect upon what Harry S Truman brought with him to the White House in 1945 and what he accomplished in the momentous eight years that followed.
    A Missouri Upbringing
As for what he brought, it was assuredly his varied background and experiences from Missouri: growing up on a series of Missouri farms, living for a while in Independence and then for three years 1903 06 in Kansas City. Remembering his sudden rise to power and his prominent political role during World War II, people often forget that Truman served a remarkable political apprenticeship as well as a county judge and Senator before reaching the vice presidency in January 1945. These experiences shaped his character and prepared him for what, three months later, was to come.
All of these things, but perhaps especially the farm, influenced Truman. As his mother once remarked, "It was on the farm that Harry got his common sense. He didn't get it in town." Truman was born in 1884, in the farm community of Lamar, 120 miles south of Kansas City, but his parents soon moved from the village to the farm. Although he lived and attended grade and high school in Independence, the later president returned to his grandparents' farm in 1906 and remained there until he left for France and World War I in 1917. He often spoke of himself as a farm boy. One can almost see him in those farm years before the war, walking or riding behind horses or mules or both, or engaged with a hoe, cleaning out the corn rows.

American President Harry S. Truman, 1884-1972
America's 33rd President, Harry S. Truman, inherited the Oval Office after the sudden death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945, as well as World War II and a White House in such disrepair Truman's piano fell through the floor. Serving the remainder of Roosevelt's term and reelected for a second, Harry S. Truman, the first world leader to employ atomic weapons died December 26th, 1972 at the age of 88. Born May 8th, 1884 in Lamar Missouri, Harry S. Truman was the first of 3 children of John and Martha Ellen Truman, who gave their son no middle name but the initial "S" to appease relatives battling for naming honors. The Truman family moved to Independence Missouri in 1890 where Harry, a late enrollment in school because of frail health and poor eyesight became smitten with a young classmate, Elizabeth "Bess" Wallace. While Harry had piano lessons two to three times a week and read voraciously, Bess was a standout student athlete and star of skating and tennis teams. The odd couple were inseparable, and in 1918 became engaged as Harry Truman, a volunteer for the Army in World War I prepared to sail for France as the Captain of Battery D from Missouri. Truman was an unlikely commander of the collection of roughnecks and rowdies who had become known as the "Dizzy D" but under his leadership shaped into a crack unit. The Battery D unit were recognized for distinguished service at the battles of St. Mihiel and Argonne, and their commanding officer, Harry S. Truman returned home to Missouri a Major in 1919. Truman's first act stateside was to marry his childhood sweetheart, Bess Wallace in June of that year.

President Harry S Truman Remember KC's own Harry Truman this Presidents' Day Harry S Truman (1884-1972), 33rd President of the United States, resided in the Kansas City area his whole life. He was elected Vice President in 1945 and became President 82 days later after President Roosevelt's unexpected death. During his first year as President, Truman oversaw the ending of World War II in Europe, approved the atomic bombings of Japan, and saw the founding of the United Nations and the birth of the nation of Israel. Truman's presidency was marked throughout by important foreign policy initiatives. Central to his foreign policy was the desire to prevent the expansion of the Soviet Union's influence. The Truman Doctrine offered military aid to countries resisting communist insurgencies; the Marshall Plan sought to revive European economies in the hope that communism would not thrive in the midst of prosperity; and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization built a military barrier confronting the Soviet-dominated part of Europe.
