Main groups and languages include Bemba in the north and centre, Tonga in the south, Nyanja in the east, and Lozi in the west. English is now the national language and is widely spoken, even in remote areas. About two-thirds of the population is Christian, though many combine that with traditional animist beliefs. A lot of traditional Zambian music is heavily rhythmic, usually played on drums, whistles and thumb pianos, and nearly always to accompany dancing. One of the most popular styles, however, is an import from the Democratic Republic of the Congo - the rumba. The staple dish in Zambia is a stiff porridge called nshima commonly made from maize or sometimes sorghum. It's typically served in a communal dish, and eaten with the right hand, rolling the nshima into a ball and dipping it into a sauce of meat or vegetables. In areas along rivers and lakes shores, fish are also eaten. Popular freshwater types include bream, lake salmon and Nile perch. Home Zambia Africa E-mail us ...

Old Fashioned Africa
The private tented camps are very few and far between but all are small and offer an extremely personal atmosphere while maintaining excellent standards. The vast majority of visitors spend time along the Lower Luangwe and Zambezi River Valleys. With open-vehicles, bush walking with armed guards and night game-drives you are virtually guaranteed fabulous gameviewing, most of it close-up and exciting. Walking is strongly recommended and the guides are professional and courteous. One truly feels "this is the old fashioned Africa" they have dreamt about.

Water and Culture
by Megan Mann , Mapulanga, Zambia Zambians often drink "Katubi" (pronounced Ka-z-be) during ceremonies. The villagers make it with water and millet. Every August, the chief has a celebration, and the people will begin making Katubi weeks beforehand in order to have enough for the party. Water is also used in making art. One villager soaks his basket strips so they are moist to be shaped and don't snap. Another woman uses water to make pottery. Both of these villagers are very talented, and don't realize just how gifted they are.

Zambia lies on the Central African Plateau and at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley. A number of early stone age sites have been uncovered throughout the country, the main sites are located at Kalambo Falls in the north and Victoria Falls in the south. Evidence of the use of fire up to 60,000 years ago has been found at Kalambo Falls. By the late stone age, around 15,000 years ago, people were using cave shelters and creating rock paintings of which unfortunately only a few have survived due to Zambia's humid climate. These early people were probably of San descent, as in other areas of Southern Africa.
They brought with them domestic animals, pottery and tool making skills and began to concentrate on agriculture and a more settled way of life. With the discovery of copper around AD350, mining began and currency and jewellery was made. Trade with Swahili tribes began around AD1500 - 1800 and at this time many of the tribes in the Zambian area were organised into chieftaincies or monarchies.

Border countries include Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Zambia sits on a high plateau, sloping sharply in the north down to Lake Tanganyika which Zambia shares with Tanzania, Burundi and Congo (Zaire). There are three major rivers; the Zambezi which forms the border with Namibia and Zimbabwe, the Kafue which flows into the Zambezi south of Lusaka (the Capital) and the Luangwa which also flows into the Zambezi. Zambia's most impressive geographical aspect is Victoria Falls which is shared with Zimbabwe. On the Zambezi river at Livingstone, the falls are 2kms wide, 100m deep and 546 million cubic meters of water flow over them every minute.

Mention the word "Zambia" and you will conjure up widely divergent impressions in the minds of Elephant encounter. (Lower Zambezi, Zambia). Back to Top Lusaka
Lusaka is a city with a certain shabby charm, and its people are friendly and cosmopolitan. The Canoe safari. (Lower Zambezi River, Zambia) name Lusaka is derived from that of a Lenje headman, Lusaaka, whose ruled a nearby village when the railway came through in 1906. A railway siding was built at the spot, and a capital city has grown up around it. Until that time, the area was relatively uninhabited, except for a notorious population of marauding lions. In fact, on the very night that the siding was laid, lions killed several oxen almost beneath the wheels of the shunting engine. The town was chartered in 1913, but when the First World War broke out, attentions turned elsewhere, building stopped and the town stagnated. It roused itself from that stagnation in 1929 and has spent little time looking back since.

by Fridah Muyale-Manenji "Shonyala okhumanya inzu yowasio tawe". This literally means that you cannot manage or know the affairs of the house of your neighbour. This is a saying the people of Ebukanga village, Kisa location in Kakamega district of the Western Province of Kenya usually use when respecting one's privacy and affairs. At times this saying is also used when people assume they know what is going on in somebody's home. Here in Zimbabwe, the country in which "I came to cook" (in my culture, when a woman is married, she has gone to cook), they say "Chakafukidza dzimba atenga" (What covers the house is the roof). This saying is almost similar to the first one in the sense that it implies that it is only the people who live in the house who know what is happening in their lives, no matter what assumptions or concepts people outside the house have of them. For some reason, when
