Rainer Werner Fassbinder
German film, television, and theatre director, and actor. He was raised in a bourgeois family by his mother as an only child. Began as an actor in fringe theatre in Munich, founding his own 'anti-theatre' company, for whom he wrote original work and also adapted classical pieces. He moved into films in 1969 and was influenced by Jean-Luc Godard. The period 1969-1976 was when he was most prolific. He ran the "Theater am Turm" with Kurt Raab and Roland Petriin Frankfurt for two years. During this time he made sixteen feature films. For television he made eleven feature films, a five-part series, two two-part adaptations, and a variety show. Also during this period he did four radio plays, and took ten acting roles in other director's films. He was a workaholic and in 13 years he wrote, directed, and produced 37 feature films for cinema and television, and four television series. He had a reputation for fast living, being an alcohol and drug addict, and having abusive relationships with his actors and technicians. Just hours after the completion of his film adaptation of Jean Genet's Querelle he died from a mixture of cocaine and sleeping pills.

The best thing I can think of would be to create a union between something as beautiful and powerful and wonderful as Hollywood films and a criticism of the status quo. That's my dream, to make such a German film.
Hanna Schygulla and Lou Castel in
Beware of a Holy Whore It isn't easy to accept that suffering can also be beautiful ...it's difficult. It's something you can only understand if you dig deeply into yourself.
RWF and Christiane Maybach in
Fox and His Friends ...[H]omosexuals have been very self-pitying, and also most of them are dominated by a sense of shame, which the Jews haven’t had. The Jews have never been ashamed of being Jews, whereas homosexuals have been stupid enough to be ashamed of their homosexuality.
Harry Baer and Eva Mattes in
Wildwechsel All in all, I find that women behave just as despicably as men do, and I try to illustrate the reasons for this: namely, that we have been led astray by our upbringing and by the society we live in. Hanna Schygulla and Gunter Lamprecht in Berlin Alexanderplatz Dirk Bogarde in Despair I'm always having the feeling that I don't want to do it [make films] anymore at all, that I'd like to take a break for a year or so, and then, when the first week of that year is up, I can't endure it anymore after all....
