Through drenched in his idiosyncracies, DeVille has a great ear for a pop song. Formerly the frontman for Mink DeVille , DeVille made great pop-and-rock albums that never really caught on in the States. However, he had developed a solid following on the Continent. Big Easy Fantasy is a half-live/half-studio set. The live material was recorded at the Bottom Line in New York and the Olympia Theater in Paris, and the studio songs were recorded in New York and Los Angeles. Back to Music home Ich Liebe Dich Ich Liebe Dich, a special production celebrating the work of Kurt Weill was staged as part of this years Dublin Theatre Festival. An enthusiastic audience welcomed Gavin Friday, Maurice Seezer and Ensemble on stage at the Tivoli Theatre. Photographer Doreen Kennedy was there, without her camera, to witness “eine sexuele musickal mit eine kleine Reich'n'Roll fur Weill" It’s been five years since I have seen Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer performing on stage for the Shag Tobacco album tour, and it was with much anticipation that I arrived at Dublin’s Tivoli Theatre for the last night of Ich Liebe Dich The interior of the theatre was transformed. Strings of lights hung from the ceiling and silver pillars had banks of lights round the stage creating a magical carnival merry-go-round effect. Large canvases with drawings (by Gavin) covered several walls and another wall had a black and white film projecting images of Berlin. As the lights dimmed, the music began and Gavin Friday emerged from the audience. His voice as strong as ever, with each song transformed himself into a new character. Back to Music home Mr Friday at Vicar Street Gavin Friday has been busy since the days of the Virgin Prunes. Collaborating with Maurice Seezer, he released three fine albums; Each Man Kills the Thing he Loves, Adam n Eve and more recently Shag Tobacco. Not to mention working on a host of soundtracks including In the Name of the Father, The Boxer, Disco Pigs and Moulin Rouge. And during this year’s Dublin Theatre Festival, staging ‘Ich Liebe Dich’ a tribute to the music of Kurt Weill. It is not surprising that for his appearance in Dublin’s Vicar Street, he had plenty of material to work with. Accompanied by the Friday-Seezer Ensemble, he performed a selection of his own songs and one or two surprises. Even though Friday was suffering from a nasty head cold, his voice resonated strong throughout the evening. ‘Apologia’, ‘I Want To Live’ and ‘Each Man Kills The Thing he Loves’ started the evening well. A glam David Bowie’s ‘Oh You Pretty Things’ was a surprise and a good intro to ‘King of Trash’. Falling Off the Edge of the World was excellent with Julia Palmer providing the backing vocals (Maria McKee on the recorded version). The Highlight of the evening was ‘Caruso’ a song with astonishing detail “I face the music and dance...”.

April 1, 1996 Review by Daniel Ewacha Photography by Rodney Gitzel Quite simply, Gavin Friday waltzed into the Starfish Room, grabbed the crowd of 120 people by the throat and proceeded to take us all for a two hour erotic and ominous roller-coaster ride that left people holding on for dear life. He then just as easily waltzed out, proving to be as mystical and enchanting as the land from which he hails, Ireland. Dublin, to be more precise. But, the question still remains to be answered: Who is Gavin Friday? Well, up to showtime I knew him as the ex-lead vocalist and controversial frontman for the Virgin Prunes, a post-punk rock band of the early '80s. And his Starfish performance left me, and I'm sure everyone else in the room, quite bewildered, not to mention exhausted. Armed with a rhinestone-encrusted megaphone and enough charisma and swagger to make Liberace roll over in his grave and David Bowie hide his head in shame, Mr. Friday provided a show filled with multiple personalities. These memorable characters ranged from a bored, under-sexed housewife who I kid you not made a cup of hot tea on stage, to an exuberant cross-dresser known as Mr. Pussy ("Poo-say"), whom Friday immortalized in a song "twenty-five years long."

Look for the interview with Friday Friday. Not too long after a Dublin kid named Larry Mullen, Jr., posted a note on his school's bulletin board that he was a drummer looking to start a band, Fionan Hanvey and friends took a stab at the music thing, too. Adam Clayton, Paul Hewson and brothers Dik and Dave Evans showed up at Mullen's house to jam. Eventually Dik left this baby band and joined Hanvey and his ragtag crew, and the rest, as they say ... Paul Hewson was dubbed Bono, Dave Evans became The Edge, and Mullen and Clayton, never ones for such things, felt their boring old real names were quite enough, thank you. The four became U2. As for the fate of Fionan Hanvey ... meet Gavin Friday. Friday and Derek Rowan, better known as Guggi, formed the backbone of a frighteningly-good Irish performance-art band, known more for early punk showmanship than tuneful introspection. As arguably Ireland's first real punk band, The Virgin Prunes were all about confrontation. Gavin, called Handbag Hanvey in his younger days, paraded around Dublin City in a dress and pulled pigs' heads from under his skirt on-stage.
