Abbas Kiarostami
Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa and Jonathan Rosenbaum
This penetrating study of the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami's life and work engages a cross-cultural dialogue between Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa, an Iranian filmmaker, and Jonathan Rosenbaum, a film critic, both of whom have an intense interest in Kiarostami's work. A pioneer in Iranian cinema and considered one of the most controversial and influential filmmakers alive, Kiarostami has written or directed more than twenty films. He gained notoriety in the West in the 1990s with the breakaway films Close-Up and Through the Olive Trees and became the first Iranian director to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Taste of Cherry. He is also largely credited for his contributions to the Iranian New Wave. Abbas Kiarostami is the first full-length, English-language study of his work. A unique and resplendent collaboration featuring two distinct but complementing perspectives, the book places Kiarostami and his films in a national context and provides American readers with valuable insights into Iranian culture, Kiarostami's portrayal of women and politics, and his influence on other filmmakers. Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa is a filmmaker and faculty member at Columbia College in Chicago. She is the author of essays and articles on Iranian cinema.

A Taste of Cherry , has written and directed some 30 films. Ten is the fourth film by Mr. Kiarostami to have been selected for screening by the New York festival. A festival representative revealed that two Chinese filmmakers also had difficulty obtaining visas, but ultimately received them. The esteemed Iranian artist has visited the US without entry problems at least seven times in the past decade. Another victimization of a renowned Iranian film director took place in April 2001, when Jafar Panahi (a sometime collaborator of Kiarostami) was viciously man-handled by US immigration officials during a stopover in New York City while in route from Hong Kong to film festivals in South America. Upon his arrival at JFK airport, immigration police took him to an office where he was chained to a bench for hours because he refused to be photographed or fingerprinted solely because of his nationality. After a harrowing ordeal, he was brought in chains to a plane that was going back to Hong Kong.

Film In dialogue with Kiarostami By Ali Akbar Mahdi
    August 25, 1998
The Iranian Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami's films seek to uncover the deepest human emotions in the most ordinary events in life. His works are a demonstration of the significance and relevance of these emotions to the restless, captive, and tormented individuals of the twentieth century. With a profound understanding and a sharp view of the fate of the modern individual, he searches for the good and bad among a constellation of events and structures which are neither under human control nor of human service. The protagonists of his films are the ordinary people who surround us. Their lives represent no more and no less of what constitute ours. Their presence in films provides us with an opportunity to think about the everydayness of our existence and relationships; an opportunity to see them as a mirror that reflects the depth of our human feelings and thoughts. On March 3, 1998, Kiarostami was invited to Columbus, Ohio, to open the screening of his celebrated "Taste of Cherry" as the guest of the Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. He attended a public forum in which he engaged in a conversation with Bill Horrigan, the curator of media at the Center, Ali Akbar Mahdi, associate professor of sociology at Ohio Wesleyan University, and the audience present in the meeting.
