The Phantom of the Opera Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber The Phantom of the Opera premiered in London in 1986 with Michael Crawford as The Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine. Based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, Phantom tells the story of a strange, disfigured man who lives in the bowels of the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with Christine, a young singer, and takes it upon himself to further her career at any costeven if it means murder. The Phantom of the Opera was transferred to Broadway in 1988 with Crawford and Brightman repeating their roles. The show was a resounding success and gave Andrew Lloyd Webber the distinction of being the first composer to have three musicals running simultaneously in London and New York.

http://hem.passagen.se/musicals/bio_and.html
Andrew Lloyd Webber was born on March 22, 1948 and grew up in a home in South Kensington, England. The home was filled with music and he showed, from an early age, an extraordinary natural talent for it. His father, William Southcombe Lloyd Webber, was professor of theory and composition at the Royal College of Music in England. His mother, Jean, was a singer and violinist at the same school. They married on 3rd of October 1942, six years before their first child, Andrew was born. When Andrew was three years old, he started to play the violin. When he was six he composed his own songs and at the age of nine he had a piece of music published in the magazine Music Teacher . It was Andrew's aunt Vi, who turned him on the theatre and especially musical theatre. She took Andrew to the big musicals like My Fair Lady , and to the films like Gigi and South Pacific . Soon after, he built a small theatre at home and wrote musicals for it. After Andrew had examined different school, he decided; he wanted to write music. On the 21 April 1965 Andrew got a letter: Dear Andrew
I've been told you're looking for a "with it" writer of lyrics for your songs, and as I've been writing pop songs for a while and particularly enjoy writing the lyrics I wonder if you consider it worth your while meeting me.

'How Did The Composer Of Meat Loaf's Hits Become lloyd webber's Latest Lyricist?' Interview with Jim Steinman discussing his latest project with Broadway's andrew lloyd webber.
http://home6.inet.tele.dk/danmei/ar-steinman2.htm
How did the composer of Meat Loaf's hits become Lloyd Webber's latest lyricist? Spencer Bright meets Jim Steinman By Spencer Bright, The Sunday Times, December 8, 1996 Jim Steinman is the bat out of hell incarnate, a man who inhabits the night. He does not get up before late afternoon, and I was warned that nothing would happen until then. So I loitered around at the Hit Factory in New York, where he recorded the multizillionselling "Bat Out of Hell I and II" classic albums for Meat Loaf. Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen stared out at me from the framed platinum discs lining the walls. In fact, he was only 10 minutes late. Steinman's gentle speech and genteel manners are at odds with the strident and fanciful language of his lyrics and the complex, orchestrated, operatic rock he composes. Bats, hell, vampires, cars and motorbikes, bad girls, obsessive love these all litter the Steinman canon. If there is a message, it's that you have to grab life while you can, realise your dreams, and get a girl to ride pillion with you without commitment. "And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are".

His father, William Southcombe Lloyd Webber, was professor of theory and composition at the Royal College of Music in England, where his mother, Jean, was a singer and violinist. His brother Julian is a world-class concert cellist. In 1965, he met Tim Rice, who would be his collaborator on his first successes, and began writing for the theatre. In 1972, Andrew married Sara Hugill, with whom he had two children. They were later divorced, and Andrew married Sarah Brightman in 1984. This marriage also ended, and in 1991 Andrew married his third wife, Madeleine. They are currently married with three children. Besides his many stage compositions, Lloyd Webber has also written film scores, pop songs, a requiem, and is the owner of the Really Useful Company, which, along with producing shows, also owns many of the West End's theatres. Among his many achievements are seven Tony Awards, three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe and an Oscar. He was the first person to have three different shows playing in New York and London. He was knighted in 1992, and in 1997 was named Lord Lloyd-Webber of Sydmonton.

    Meat Loaf:
The Very Best Of Meat Loaf
By Bob Gajarsky, Consumable Online, 1998 The magical touch of Jim Steinman has been spread amongst a diverse group of stars. Adult contemporary artists such as Air Supply and Barbara Streisand, pop stars including Bonnie Tyler and Celine Dion, and even the gothic Sisters of Mercy are a few performers who have been united with the hitmaking prowess of Steinman. But mention Steinman's name to a group of rock and roll fans, and there is only one person who is associated with Jim Steinman. Marvin Lee Aday was born in 1951 in Dallas, Texas. Initial musical success was fleeting; a 1971 duet with Stoney under his stage name, Meat Loaf, provided only one minor hit, "What You See Is What You Get". And prior to the Rocky Horror Picture Show (in which he had a minor part as Eddie, singing "Whatever Happened To Saturday Night" before being quite literally served up to guests) became a cult hit, the only real musical exposure for Meat would be his lead vocals on Ted Nugent's 1976 "Free For All".

    Houston, Texas About The Musicians
Performing professionally since 1985, the musicians are members of Houston's finest musical organizations, including the Houston Ballet Orchestra, the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra and Orchestra X. The Houston String Quartet features two violins, viola and cello. This group plays with a rich, full string sound, beautiful for the entire wedding ceremony, or, if desired, accompanying a vocal selection or alternating with organ or choir. A popular choice, the quartet's sound easily fills a large church or room with the sweet and expressive sounds of the strings. Some couples choose to add a trumpet to herald the bride's entrance and the final recessional. The Elizabeth Trio, two violins and cello, or flute, violin and cello, specializes in the works of Mozart, Haydn and the music of the baroque era (Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Pachelbel, for example). The Trio also performs all of the standard ceremony music. This is an elegant sounding group and is ideal for weddings of all sizes. For more intimate weddings or smaller venues, a Duo or Solo instrumentalist adds a romantic touch.

    36. Paganini Variations
Fred Flaxman notes the original Caprices and discusses the assorted interpretations granted some or all of them by such composers as Paganini, Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Szymanowski, Lutoslawski, and andrew lloyd webber.
    http://www.fredflaxman.com/Paganini.html
The Tune That Drove Composers Wild
In 1820 an Italian violinist, unknown outside of his native country at the time, published a tune that was destined to drive audiences and composers wild ever since. His name: Niccolo Paganini. The piece: the last of 24 caprices for solo violin. These capricci , which explore virtually every aspect of violin technique, are still the supreme test of the abilities of any violinist. The first composer to write a set of variations on this tune was Paganini himself. In fact his Caprice No. 24 in A Minor. Opus 1 , is a set of 11 variations on his short, original theme. Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Szymanowski, Lutoslawski, Andrew Lloyd Webber and others wrote their own variations on this Paganini theme. Although Paganini's original caprice takes Canadian violinist James Ehnes only about four minutes to play (Telarc CD-80398), those who were smitten by Paganini's tune usually kept the variations going much longer. Brahms, for example, wrote 28 variations on this theme which takes French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet over 22 minutes to play (London 444 338-2). "It's an incredibly difficult work, a real challenge," Thibaudet admits. "Not many pianists would dare to play them in public. It's an extremely physical piece, demanding such power and control. It contains every imaginable difficulty. You get the feeling that Brahms set out to stretch the performer to the limits.... Once you've got to grips with this work, there won't be much left that your fingers can't get 'round."
