44. British Empire: Armed Forces: Units: British Cavalry: 1822 - 1922: 13th Hussars:
BP's portrait as military officer.
http://www.btinternet.com/~britishempire/empire/forces/armyunits/britishcavalry/
Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941)
'B-P' joined the 13th Hussars in 1876 as a 2nd lieutenant. He was excused the Sandhurst course because of his high placing in the exam and gazetted straight into the regiment, then stationed in India. From the start he showed an aptitude for and enjoyment of military scouting and irregular warfare. He also developed an aptitude for pig-sticking, winning the inter-regimental cup in 1883. He was detached for scouting service in Africa, in the Ashanti (1895) and Matabele (1896) campaigns.
In 1897 he transferred to the 5th Dragoon Guards which he Commanded. While he was on leave in England in 1899 he was summarily appointed to raise a force of mounted rifles to be based in Mafeking with the secret aim of making raids on the Boers in Transvaal. Baden-Powell was a publicity-seeking man and his hour had come. Mafeking was beseiged by a superior force of Boers on October 12th 1899 which lasted for 217 days until May 17th 1900. The relief of Mafeking was celebrated throughout the Empire as it was the first victory the British had achieved in the Boer War. But was Baden-Powell (he pronounced his name 'Poel') deserving of his hero status? He was certainly inovative, resourceful and cool under stress, but he had his failures. Nowadays, one hundred years after the event, what we find most unforgivable was his treatment of the black population of Mafeking.
It was an unstated agreement between Boers and British that no blacks were to be involved in the war. B-P took the unprecedented step of arming 300 Africans (with rather antiquated weapons), and christened them the 'Black Watch' setting them out to guard part of the perimeter. As it happened, they proved invaluable. What was infinitely worse, was his forced expulsions of blacks. On one occasion, 700 Baralong women were persuaded to attempt a mass exodus. Only 10 got away, the rest returned, many having been stripped and flogged by the Boers.

Baden-Powell, Robert (1857-1941) Publisert 08.01.2001 20:14 - Oppdatert 30.11.2001 09:37
Beleiringen varte i 271 dager og da boerne trakk seg tilbake i mai 1900, brøt jubelen ut i Londons gater.

There are, as in Sweden, two Guide Associations, the "Y.W.C.A. Guides of Norway," who wear khaki, and the "Norwegian Girl Guides League," who wear dark blue. They have a joint committee for international purposes, and are on very friendly terms. The heads of both organizations came off to see us, Miss Josefine Barman, of the Y.W.C.A. Guides, and Miss Kari Aas, of the "Blue Guides." The Chief Scout of Denmark, Admiral Karstensen, who was staying at the Royal Palace, also came off to meet us." Carrying the Chief Scout, Stockholm, Sweden "... The Chief Scout then descended the hill to have a look at the Scouts, but he got more than he bargained for, as he was promptly seized and tossed in the air (before the anxious eyes of his wife) and then carried down the lines, lying full length on the Scouts' shoulders. He was brought back to the terrace and safely deposited, whereupon he thanked the Scouts for his nice ride. The Chief Guide was then seized and though not actually tossed, was carried round by a party of girls, including the two Chief Commissioners. She looked thoroughly at ease in this novel form of carriage, and smiled and waved like royalty from its state coach." Robert Baden-Powell
British Spy in Europe Before World War I
London-born Baden-Powell was the son of a mathematics professor who taught at Oxford . After completing his public schooling at Charterhouse , he entered the Army , excused from all training because of his brilliant test achievements.
Baden-Powell was sent to South Africa in 1887. A year later he was involved in the campaigns against the Zulus, acting as an intelligence officer for the celebrated Flying Column . In 1890, Baden-Powell was assigned to the British bastion of Malta, serving under his uncle, Sir H. A. Smyth , governor of the fortress. A short time later, Baden-Powell was named as chief British intelligence officer for the Mediterranean and was specifically ordered to gather information on Balkan troop dispositions and movements.
Baden-Powell became one of England's most accomplished if eccentric spies. His sharp ability to make and record quick, accurate observations, his skill at tracking, and his flair for amateur theatrics all contributed to his success. It would be some time before Mansfield Cumming would organize the British military intelligence system known as . It was a colorful era in which such gifted amateurs as Baden-Powell practiced espionage with inventive if not outlandish disguises.

58. Baden-Powell Games Book
The Scout Library, No. 4 Games Book by robert Badenpowell
http://webhome.idirect.com/~wolfnowl/BPGames.htm
The Scout Library, No. 4 Scouting Games by Sir Robert Baden-Powell Author of "Scouting for Boys," "Yarns for Boy Scouts," "Boy Scouts Beyond the Seas," etc. sixth edition FOREWORD TO SIXTH EDITION The training of the Boy Scouts is done mainly by means of games, practices and competitions such as interest them, and at the same time bring into use the attributes of manliness and good citizenship which we desire to inculcate into them. There is, therefore, an aim, physical or moral, underlying those that are given in the following pages. These games do not exhaust what it is possible to give; they are but samples or suggestions upon which imaginative Scoutmasters will easily contrive better ones and more of them, suited to their local conditions. But in devising these, the higher aim should always be kept in view; that is the instructor should think of what points he wishes to teach and then invent a game or display in which to bring them into practice. In playing these Games it should be remembered that they improve very much on the second and third trial, as minor rules have often to be introduced to suit local circumstances. A time limit should generally be imposed to bring them off successfully. Through these games, apart from their health - and joy giving properties, we can instill the sense of fair play, discipline, and self-control - in a word, good sportsmanship, among our future men. Then in addition to the games mentioned in this book we have adopted other activities in the Scout movement in the shape more particularly of swimming and climbing. These are for the fuller development of the boys morally as well as physically. Morally, because swimming gives a sense of mastery over one of the elements and of fitness for service to them as a result of exercising pluck and perseverance; and climbing similarly gives a sense of self-reliance and power through achievement in overcoming a difficult adventure.
