The balloon set off from Puerto Llano
A professional stuntman has broken the world record for bungee jumping from a hot-air balloon. Curtis Rivers, 32, lept from a balloon 49,869 feet (15,200 metres) above Andalucia, Spain, while attached to an elastic rope. After bouncing several times he cut himself free and parachuted back to earth. Mr Rivers, from Guisborough, Teesside, is awaiting official verification of the feat which was performed and recorded on Sunday. Mr Rivers is no stranger to risks
He performed the feat while preparing for a world-record parachute jump. His operations manager Jim Crosbie, 41, said: "It was fantastic... he is fine. "We were doing some high altitude testing of the equipment, and while we were there we decided to do the bungee jump as well as test the cameras and oxygen. "That height was the lower limit of where you can jump without oxygen.

Curtis Rivers prepares for the hour-long freezer test
A professional stuntman is preparing for a world record-breaking parachute jump - by sitting in a freezer. Curtis Rivers plans to break a 45-year-old record and make the longest jump ever, spending a full hour falling through the air from 33,000 feet. But at that height, temperatures drop to about minus 54C - requiring special clothing that needs rigorous testing. His operations manager Jim Crosbie, who will also endure the hour-long freezer test in King's Lynn on Thursday, said Mr Rivers was "very confident" he would succeed in his record-winning jump. Mr Rivers hopes to break three world records
"He's always had this dream," said Mr Crosbie. "In fact, he did it in February when he jumped from 25,000 feet and fell for 50 minutes, which breaks the world record by five minutes. "But his camera equipment failed, so he had no proof."

TESTIMONY OF H. CURTIS SPALDING,
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF SAVE THE BAY, INC. OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND
TO THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT AND PUBLIC WORKS
WASHINGTON, D.C. JULY 9, 1998
On behalf of Save The Bay's 20,000 members, I would like to thank Senator Chafee and the Committee for this opportunity to present testimony in support of S. 1222, the Estuary Habitat Restoration Partnership Act. Save The Bay is a member-supported nonprofit organization. Our mission is to restore and protect Narragansett Bay and its watershed. Five years ago, over 20 nonprofit organizations met to discuss the future challenges for our nation's estuaries and to set a course of action to meet those challenges. Many of our coastal areas were beginning to reap the benefits of the Clean Water Act. In Narragansett Bay, harbor seals and oysters were starting to return after decades of absence due to polluted water. Despite similar limited recoveries in many of our nation's estuaries, we shared a deep concern that many species of fish, birds and other animals were not recovering as we had expected. Also troubling, some coastal areas not previously affected by water pollution were now in serious decline. After months of inquiry and discussion, we saw that the problem with the health of our estuaries was no longer grossly polluted water, but the ongoing loss of habitat for fish, birds, shellfish and plants along our shorelines and in our watersheds. Thus in late 1994, Restore America's Estuaries was formed. It is a current partnership of 11 nonprofit organizations from Seattle to Galveston to the Gulf of Maine. Over the past four years, each organization has identified and targeted the habitat resources in its own estuary and coastal environment that are threatened and in need of restoration. Restore America's Estuaries has pledged collectively to restore one million acres of habitat to our nation's estuaries by the year 2010.

Donna Ragusa is the Four Rivers District Cub Scout Training Chairperson, Committee Chairwoman, Den Leader to Pack 25, St. Eugene's Church in Yonkers and Committee Chairwoman to Troop 1, Group of Citizens in Crestwood. Donna has been in Scouting for a relatively short period of time, four years, but has made a great contribution in many ways. She was one of the founders of a new Pack at St. Eugene's Parish four years ago. She became Chairperson to Troop 1, Crestwood and helped develop their Life and Eagle prospects. When John Gomez became ill early in 2002, he volunteered to step down as Cub Training Chairman, and he recommended Donna for the job. It's people like Donna and John in the Scouting movement that make it the fine organization it is. The Four Rivers District is proud to present the Award of Merit to Andy J. Casucci

Nov 26th- The Best Sunday in Antarctica- Part Two Part Two: The Barnes Glacier was monstrous. The pictures from yesterday and today are of the terminus of the glacier. This is the end of the glacier. Glaciers are like moving rivers of ice. They are formed from years and years of snow being compacted into ice. These "rivers" slowly move down hill due to their own weight. Sometimes chunks of ice will calve (break) off of a glacier into the sea. These chunks of ice are then known as icebergs. There are icebergs in Antarctica that are the size of the state of Rhode Island! The sea at the terminus of the Barnes Glacier is frozen. There are numerous cracks in the sea ice. Seals use these cracks to get up onto the ice. So far I have only seen seals from afar. I wonder if I'll get a chance to see one up close? After visiting the glacier, we loaded back up into the Delta and drove to Cape Evans. In January of 1911 Captain Scott and his men built a hut there as a base for their South Polar expedition. This is known as the Terra Nova Hut. This hut was abandoned after the expedition. The surviving members of the team left tons of belongings there. These items still remain. The hut is now an official historic monument of Antarctica. Only twelve people are permitted to enter the hut at a time. This is done for preservation purposes. Walking into the hut was like walking back in time. I couldn't believe that I was actually entering into the place where Captain Scott and his men once stayed. I have read many books about the expedition. To see the hut with my own eyes was an unbelievable privilege. I felt like I was walking into a sacred place.

Curtis Rivers
International stuntman and double world-record holder Curtis Rivers believes that without Damart Sport some of the stunts and records he as attempted would not have been possible.
Rivers has starred in movies such as the James Bond thriller 'Tomorrow Never Dies' and regularly appears on TV programmes such as 'The Bill' and 'London's Burning'.
But Rivers' other interest lies in breaking death-defying world records. Rivers currently holds the record for the highest Bungee jump (15,200ft) and highest and longest parachute jump (25,000ft). Backed by Damart Sport, Rivers leapt from a hot air balloon to secure his place in the record books for the highest ever Bungee jump.
And he quickly followed that up by leaping from a plane at 25,000ft to smash the record for the highest ever parachute jump. It took Rivers 45 minutes to descend to Earth on that jump.
"Damart Sport has been instrumental in making some of the things I've achieved actually happen," says Rivers. "When you are parachuting in temperatures of -50°C and Bungee jumping at -20°C it's imperative you have all the scientific and technological advantages you can have. Damart Sport really has given me the edge. Without them it wouldn't have been possible."
Curtis is now looking forward to a two-week trip to America next February, in which he hopes to break many more records."At the moment I'm gearing up towards a new attempt at both the parachuting and Bungee jump records. I want to get the Bungee jump record as high as 20,000ft if possible.
