Quote: " The other aspects of being a movie star I can't knock: the fame, the grand houses, the glamour, the money, friends.
We've lost another great from the golden age of Hollywood: the delicate beauty that was Loretta Young . So famed were her looks that frequent close-ups became a keynote of her screen appearances.

Starting out as a bit part player in her youth, Loretta Young worked through the silent age (one of those bit parts being in ' The Sheik ') and toiled through the 30's in roles that never really got her anywhere. Once she entered into a contract with 20th Century Fox in the mid-30's, her career took off, particularly with hit movies such as 1935's ' Call of the Wild ' (during which she began a noted relationship with Clark Gable) and ' Kentucky ' (1938), opposite Richard Greene and Walter Brennan.

YOUNG, LORETTA U.S. Actor Loretta Young was one of the first Hollywood actresses to move successfully from movies to a television series. She made that transition in 1953 with Letter to Loretta (soon retitled The Loretta Young Show) , an anthology drama series. Anthology dramas were a staple of 1950s programming, presenting different stories with different characters and casts each week. Young hosted and produced the series, and acted in over half the episodes as well. Capitalizing on her glamorous movie star image, her designer fashions became her television trademark. The show's success spurred other similar series, but Young's was the most successful. Like Lucille Ball, she was one of the few women who had control of her own successful series, the first woman to have her own dramatic anthology series on network television, the first person to win both an Academy Award and an Emmy Award. Loretta Young began her acting career with bit parts as a child extra in silent films. By the mid-1930s, fashion and glamour were important components of her star image. By 1948, after more than twenty years in films, she was recognized for her acting when she won the Best Actress Academy Award for her performance in

THE LORETTA YOUNG SHOW U.S. Dramatic Anthology The Loretta Young Show , airing on NBC from 1953 to 1961, was the first and longest-running anthology drama series to feature a female star as host and actress. Film star Loretta Young played a variety of characters in well over half of the episodes, but her glamorous, fashion-show entrances as host became one of the most memorable features of this prime-time series. Premiering under the title Letter to Loretta, the series was renamed The Loretta Young Show The successful format and style or The Loretta Young Show spurred other similar shows. Jane Wyman Theater (1955-58), The DuPont Show with June Allyson (1959-61), and The Barbara Stanwyck Show (1960-61) were prime-time network series that attempted to capitalize on the Young's success. Similar syndicated series included Ethel Barrymore Theater Crown Theater with Gloria Swanson (1954), and

Loretta Young: American beauty
The elegant beauty Loretta Young, whose acting career extended from silent movies to television, has died aged 87 of ovarian cancer. She passed away at the home of her sister Georgian Montalban and actor Ricardo Montalban early on Saturday, said longtime agent and friend Norman Brokaw. Loretta Young was born Gretchen Young in January 1913. Her big Hollywood break came by chance. A director telephoned asking for her sister Polly Ann who was unavailable for an audition at the time. Gretchen, aged 14, went instead. Although it was only for a bit role, it led to a contract and a name change to Loretta. Famous for close-ups
Sharing the spotlight with Warren Beatty at the 1982 Oscars
She was soon on her way to a career in which she made almost 100 films that exploited her elegant beauty. Loretta Young became famous for the "close-ups" that were always included. She was born in Salt Lake City and she was three years old when her mother took her and her three sisters to Hollywood to run a boarding-house.

LORETTA YOUNG
