Arteriosclerosis Topics [General] Atherosclerosis Nonatheromatous Arteriosclerosis Atherosclerosis A form of arteriosclerosis characterized by patchy subintimal thickening (atheromas) of medium and large arteries, which can reduce or obstruct blood flow. The prevalence of clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis in general increases in postmenopausal women and begins to approach that in age-matched men. Pathology and Pathogenesis Atherosclerotic plaque consists of accumulated intracellular and extracellular lipids, smooth muscle cells, connective tissue, and glycosaminoglycans.
