What is hypoglycemia? It is a metabolic disturbance characterized by fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Hypoglycemics have depleted reserves they need to rebuild in various endocrine glands including the pituitary gland and growth hormone; pancreas and glucagon; adrenal gland and cortisol. In addition, hypoglycemics may lose the brain's ability to perceive hypoglycemia and no longer respond to low levels of sugar with an appropriate release of adrenaline, the savior that always pulls you out of the hypoglycemia. Is there an easier explanation?

Without treatment, a low blood sugar may progress to unconsciousness and convulsions. The risk of low blood sugars can be reduced by:
  • Providing extra snacks for extra activity (consult exercise guide and/or dietitian)
  • Eating immediately after taking insulin if the blood sugar is less than 100 mg/dl (5.5 mmol/l)

Hypoglycemia
by Ronald Hoffman, M.D.
Conscious Choice, July 1999 Americans love to "carbo-load." We are a society in love with carbohydrates and it shows in our poor health standing versus the other industrialized nations of the world. In fact, the United States Surgeon General's office says that eating habits helped account for two-thirds of all deaths last year from five of the top ten killer diseases and diabetes is one of them! But Americans don't get their nutrition information from the government or even from their doctors they get it from advertising. Though we talk up things like fiber, what is often palmed off as a high fiber food is a highly refined commercial "brown" bread made of food coloring and white flour in a wrapper depicting a log cabin on the front a far cry from the fiber intake of our stone-age ancestors: roots, shoots, foliage, and occasional berries.
In essence, hypoglycemia is low blood sugar, and it is increasingly prevalent in our society. Hypoglycemia can cause an array of symptoms, including spaciness, fatigue, mood changes, PMS, sugar craving, headaches, difficulty focusing the eyes, tremors, temperamental outbursts, depression, excessive sweating, hot flashes, palpitations, cold extremities, abdominal pain, and panic attacks.
If you have any of these symptoms, the next time you go to a doctor, try asking him or her if the symptoms you experience could be due to hypoglycemia. You may provoke a bemused or annoyed look, or perhaps your doctor will, in fact, suggest a glucose tolerance test. Don't bother. Glucose tolerance tests, as performed conventionally, are not designed to detect hypoglycemia until or unless it has reached a very extreme level.

Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar)
What is hypoglycemia?
Hypoglycemia is the condition of having a glucose (blood sugar) level that is too low to effectively fuel the body's blood cells. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body. The normal range of blood sugar is approximately 60 to 120 mg/dl (milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood). When the level is below 45 mg/dl, a serious condition is suspected. Hypoglycemia may be a condition by itself, or may be a complication of diabetes or other disorders. It is most often seen as a complication of diabetes, which is sometimes referred to as insulin reaction.
What causes hypoglycemia?
There are many different possible causes of hypoglycemia, including:
  • diabetics taking too much insulin to lower the blood sugar
  • other drugs used to treat diseases such as AIDS-related pneumonia
  • psychological disturbances
  • alcohol consumption without eating adequately
  • diabetics who miss a meal or exercise too strenuously
  • insulin-producing tumor in the pancreas

Hypoglycemia is a general term used to describe a mixed bag of symptoms that are due to a derangement of glucose metabolism . Under the strict medical definition, hypoglycemia mainly refers to a drop in fasting blood sugar below 50 mg % (normal range 70-90mg%). This drop can be associated with differing symptoms depending on the rate at which the blood sugar falls. The causes of functional or reactive hypoglycemia (not absolute or fasting hypoglycemia) can be divided into 3 categories:
  • High sugar / refined carbohydrate diet leading to hyperinsulinism Hypoadrenalism-stress leading to adrenal exhaustion Alimentary or gastric surgery leading to rapid stomach emptying or "dumping syndrome."
  • A Glucose Tolerance Test (ideally lasting 5-6 hours) can confirm a diagnosis, but more alternative doctors are forgoing the inconvenience and shock to the system because symptoms alone are reliable enough. Central nervous system changes, adrenal

    Symptoms Of Hypoglycemia And Hypoadrenocorticism
The Wrong Diet can produce stress in the body. The body must then compensate, or adapt to keep functioning. Selye and Tintera have found that the keystone of defense is the adrenal cortex. An individual with adrenal under-function does not handle stress well. Tintera calls this hypoadrenocorticism (Bul 96). Selye writes that the main regulators of the stress syndrome are: brain, nerves, pituitary, adrenals, thyroid, liver, kidney, blood vessels, connective tissue cells, and white blood cells. These main regulators interact, causing the body to adjust or adapt. The way in which they interact is different for every person depending on one's conditioning factors such as heredity, previous exposures, diet, etc. Thus, the same stress my result in chest pain in one person, depression in another, and allergies or general well being in others who are able to adapt, at least for the time being. The Great Number of Symptoms which may result from the failure of the hormonal adaption mechanism is admittedly a challenge to credibility. Excessive fatigue and inability to concentrate are the most common. Salzar found that relative hypoglycemia mimics any neuropsychiatric disorder. He listed the major symptoms from a psychiatric standpoint: depression, insomnia, irritability, lack of concentration, crying spells, phobias, forgetfulness, confusion, unsocial or anti-social behavior, and suicidal tendencies.

Hypoglycemia Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar. This brochure is intended to increase knowledge about reactive hypoglycemia and to give suggestions on its control. What is reactive hypoglycemia?
Reactive hypoglycemia can occur when blood glucose falls, resources of glucose from the liver are exhausted and an individual chooses not to eat. Gradually the body adjusts to this situation by using muscle protein to feed glucose to brain cells and fat to fuel the other body cells. But before this adjustment takes place an individual may experience symptoms of glucose deprivation to the brain resulting in symptoms such as: anxiety, hunger, dizziness, weakness, shaking muscles and racing heart. Because these symptoms are common to many conditions a health care provider should be consulted to assess an individual's specific symptoms and concerns. Who does reactive hypoglycemia effect? Reactive hypoglycemia occurs in about 2-3 out of every 10 young women, more often in obese women and less often in people over age 45. While most people experience low blood glucose levels at times, if the symptoms are severe or ongoing it is important to learn to eat promptly and properly with a balanced meal or snack. Reactive hypoglycemia does not lead to more severe conditions.

Hello there, welcome to my humble collection of diabetes links. I've tried to include as much as I can as I find new things. This quest began Mar.4th,1997 when I was diagnosed with type 2. Luckily I had just aquired a computer, and immediately put it to work searching out any info I could find on this disease. Boy! Was I surprised how much there was out there! The list got so long I felt I just had to share it with anyone that was making the same journey as I. I've had a lot of response since I published it, so I must be doing something right. I sure hope it helps you find whatever you came for. Please take a moment after perusing my page to drop me a line with your comments about the page. I welcome any and all suggestions you might have! And if your in the mood for some humor (good medicine), stop by my humor page. It's full of little stories, and anecdotes sent to me by friends.
I have just added a page with my Personal Story of dealing with finding out I was a Diabetic. It may be an eye opener for some that are lax in their effort to control this disease.

Hypoglycemia A publication of the National Institutes of Health and the NIDDK Glucose, a form of sugar, is the body's main fuel. Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, occurs when blood levels of glucose drop too low to fuel the body's activity. Carbohydrates (sugars and starches) are the body's main dietary sources of glucose. During digestion, the glucose is absorbed into the blood stream (hence the term "blood sugar"), which carries it to every cell in the body. Unused glucose is stored in the liver as glycogen. Hypoglycemia can occur as a complication of diabetes, as a condition in itself, or in association with other disorders.

HYPOGLYCEMIA - low Blood Sugar:  Nutritional Causes, Prevention and Therapies
While many practitioners recommend nearly identical dietary lifestyles for people suffering from
hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia (diabetes), I believe that sodium management is one of the most
important considerations to control sugar metabolism in both situations.
Sodium effectively slows insulin response, which in diabetics simply contributes to poor blood sugar
control, however in low blood sugar types, this is an advantage because it prevents a quick rise and
fall in insulin levels and subsequently reduces those dreaded blood sugar spikes.
Despite a big emphasis being put on the glycemic index (GI) of a particular food or beverage by some
practitioners, my personal clinical experience has shown that only the reduction / elimination of simple
carbs is necessary, while complex carbs, or even refined carbs don't have to be avoided at all, regard- less of their glycemic index.  Once a patient's chemical profile is reasonably corrected, the GI becomes

Younger children with type 1 diabetes have a higher incidence of hypoglycemia-induced nocturnal seizures than older children. With the emphasis on tight glycemic control, adverse effects of hypoglycemia (including neurodevelopmental difficulties) have become a growing concern. Porter and associates studied children with type 1 diabetes receiving twice-daily insulin injections to determine the frequency of nocturnal hypoglycemia and to assess any predictors of this complication. Nocturnal blood glucose levels were measured from samples obtained during the evening or the night immediately before a clinic visit. A questionnaire was administered to review any symptoms that may have occurred during the previous 48 hours and during the study period. Carbohydrate intake on the night of the study was determined. The authors conclude that episodes of nocturnal hypoglycemia may be related to possible neurocognitive sequelae. Care must be taken to avoid glycemic control tight enough to cause episodes of low serum glucose.
