Hypoglycemia Information
Please note that I am not a medical expert. The information on these pages is merely from my research and experience. Hypoglycemia (HG) is a condition characterized by periodic lows in the blood sugar level that cause a variety of symptoms including nervousness, shakiness, brain clouds, fatigue, depression, and irritability. This condition is also referred to as Low Blood Sugar (LBS). The general cause of these symptoms in hypoglycemics is not eating often enough, or eating too much sugar/carbohydrates. Eating too much sugar/carbohydrates causes a high blood sugar level which then results in the pancreas overreacting and secreting too much insulin in its attempt to lower the blood sugar. The result is a very low blood sugar level. The most common treatment for hypoglycemia is by diet. Genetics
HG is often hereditary. So if you have a relative with diabetes or hypoglycemia, this might help confirm that your syptoms are a result of hypoglycemia. Age
I've noticed that the majority of people develop HG during their mid-twenties. In my personal experience, I know that I've always had HG to some degree and couldn't go too long between meals. It was in my mid-twenties that the symptoms became bad enough that I had to change my diet to handle them.

He collected research papers demonstrating the extent of abnormal glucose fluctuations among alcoholics and sent three different reports on the subject to AA physicians. Wilson's interest was personal as well as professional. For many years, he suffered from depression and other hypoglycemic symptoms. He also consumed huge amounts of sugar and caffeine. Finally, by eliminating sugar and caffeine and making other dietary changes, he stabilized his blood sugar and achieved a sense of well-being. Study after study has demonstrated that the vast majority of alcoholics are hypoglycemic. In one conducted by J. Poulos, D. Stafford, and K. Carron, fifty outpatient alcoholics and fifty halfway-house alcoholics were compared with a control group of one hundred nurses and teenagers. Of the one hundred alcoholics, ninety-six proved to be hypoglycemic; only fourteen of the nonalcoholic controls were hypoglycemic. A three-year study by Robert Meiers, M.D., in Santa Cruz, California, found that more than 95 percent of alcoholics studied suffered from low blood sugar.

This web site looks at the various aspects of hypoglycemia (click on the word hyplogycemia for information on what it actually is) in the sense that hypoglycemia is seen as the starting point for a discussion on nutritional disorders underlying most degenerative diseases and mental disorders. Clinical nutrition is an evidence-based medical science, supported by untold numbers of clinical studies and trials. This is basically a self-help web page for people who have or who think they may have hypoglycemia as a primary metabolic condition associated with any other illness that are known to respond to nutritional medicine. Readers are encouraged to consult complementary doctors and other professional health care workers familiar with clinical nutrition and herbalism.
Thus although hypoglycemia and the hypoglycemic diet are at the core of nutritional treatment, it is only the first step in the treatment of over 90 other illnesses, including many ‘psychological’ problems that may have resulted from the underlying disorder. We will include links to some other sites on Hypoglycemia on the internet (See Links)
It is recognized that psychological problems such as anxiety, stresses of life, depression, unhappy personal relationships, uncontrollable anger and frustration may weaken the immune system and thus cause the many physical ailments. Thus this web site has a folder offering several articles on practical self-help PSYCHOTHERAPY which will help people to overcome these problem, once they have repaired the original metabolic disorder. This is particularly useful with such diseases as Anxiety, Aggressive Behaviour, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Alcoholism and Drug Addiction, Chronic Depression, which are usually influenced by both nutritional and psychological (attitudinal) factors.

familial hyperinsulinism, pancreatic nesidioblastosis or hyperinsulinemic
hypoglycemia, is a rare genetic disease, that can be inherited in a
dominant or recessive way. It is mainly characterized by the presence of
inappropriately high levels of insulin in parallel with low or very low
glucose levels.
This disease affects newborns and infants and the frequency varies
depending on the population being studied. Estimates have been obtained for
unselected populations, and it is calculated at a frequency of 1 case for every 40,000 or 50,000 newborns. On the other hand in the Saudi Arabian population is as frequent as 1:2500 and there is a recent report from Finland, that also estimates a higher frequency of 1:3200. Some of the populations that have higher frequency of the disease are small in size and consanguineous marriages are common. This refers to marrying someone from your own family, where the probability of having the same good and bad

hypoglycemia
Hypoglycemia refers to low blood sugar, or technically a lower than normal blood glucose level. It is rarely encountered in pediatric practice outside of the newborn nursery, where it is a commonplace event. Profound hypoglycemia in the newborn can cause brain damage. Aggressive blood glucose monitoring of asymptomatic (nothing appears to be wrong) infants has been the standard. I think attitudes are softening in the era of cost-benefit analysis, since many babies seem to be subjected to large numbers of (in retrospect) needless blood glucose determinations compared to the actual number of significant problems identified. In the newborn, symptoms of hypoglycemia include sweating, jitteriness, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, pallor, or even apnea . Profound or very difficult to treat hypoglycemia in a newborn can signal the presence of rare but dangerous conditions such as galactosemia, growth hormone deficiency, insulin secreting tumors, or may reflect severe intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).

Causes of Hypoglycemia:
  • Too much insulin or oral medication.
More exercise or activity than usual.
Skipping or delaying meals or snacks, or eating less food than usual.
Signs of Hypoglycemia
  • Slurred speech Headache Tingling lips Sweating (cool) Rapid heart beat Confusion/disorientation Weakness Hunger Nervousness Coma Tremors
Confirmation of Hypoglycemia
Check your blood glucose if you suspect you have low blood glucose.
Treat Hypoglycemia When:
  • Your blood glucose is below 60 mg/dL, with or without the symptoms. Your blood glucose is between 60-100 mg/dL, with symptoms. You are unable to check your blood glucose. If your blood glucose is above 100 mg dL, there is no need for treatment.

hypoglycemia By Terry Mason, MPH Hypoglycemia is the condition that occurs when blood sugar, or glucose, levels drop below normal. What is going on in the body? Blood sugar levels drop when people don't eat for a long time, or when they have complications of diabetes and other diseases. The blood glucose level is affected by the hormones insulin and glucagon. An imbalance of these hormones can cause blood sugar levels to fall too low. When the blood sugar falls too low, hypoglycemia develops. What are the signs and symptoms of the condition? When blood sugar drops and hypoglycemia develops, most people will begin feeling weak drowsy excessively hungry , and dizzy . A person may feel confused or irritable . The person may appear pale, may tremble, or feel cold and clammy. A rapid heartbeat may also be felt. In severe cases, usually associated with diabetes, a person can lose consciousness and lapse into a coma. What are the causes and risks of the condition? Hypoglycemia usually occurs in people with diabetes . When people have diabetes, the pancreas does not make enough insulin or the insulin made is not effective. Blood sugar rises and builds up in the blood. People with diabetes take insulin or oral medications to keep their blood sugar down. If a person with diabetes takes too much medication, misses meals, or doesn't eat enough food, the person can become hypoglycemic. Rarely, hypoglycemia can occur in people who do not have diabetes. Hypoglycemia can occur in early

Finally, Help for Hypoglycemia Sufferers!
A re you tired of the medical community telling you hypoglycemia doesn't exist or "Your symptoms are all in your head" or "You just need to take a vacation"? To date there is little to no information available for sufferers of hypoglycemia and when you do find information, you are left wondering if it is correct. For the above reasons and because of my misdiagnosis of hypoglycemia for nearly 10 years (yes...10 years) I had developed a quarterly newsletter called Sweet Nothings Through Sweet Nothings , I have met people from all over the world and from all walks of life. Sweet Nothings has even been mentioned twice in Veggie Life magazine. It has been the most rewarding experience of my life. In fact, it has made me realize that I am not meant to be an accountant the rest of my life. My purpose is to help people...not companies. I am now dumping my career of 10 years and am going to pursue medical school (my first career choice many moons ago). Unfortunately, due to the schooling time constraint I am no longer able to take any new subscribers.

    What is hypoglycemia?
If your blood sugar drops too low, you can have a low blood sugar reaction called hypoglycemia. A low blood sugar reaction can come on fast. Generally, a level below about 60 mg/dl is called low blood sugar. It may occur once or twice a week if you have Type 1 diabetes. Hypoglycemia is much less common with Type 2 diabetes, but it can happen especially with some medications. People who have tight control of their diabetes are more at risk for low blood sugar and so are the elderly. Studies have shown that 50 percent of severe low blood sugars occur between midnight and 8 a.m. Talk to your diabetes educator about what to do.
    What causes hypoglycemia?

    80. Fibromyalgia Treatment Center / Guaifenesin Protocol
hypoglycemia, low blood sugar, is a name often used to denote a diseasethough it is only one symptom of an illness with many complaints.
    http://www.guaidoc.com/hypoglycemia.htm
Good news! The medical community at long last seems to be recognising the value of low carbohydrate eating. See this New York Times article What If It Has All Been A Big Fat Lie? for the latest salvo in the "fat wars."
Here is another article, this one from the July 29, 2002 issue of the Los Angeles Times. Rethinking Our Daily Bread Hypoglycemia, low blood sugar, is a name often used to denote a disease though it is only one symptom of an illness with many complaints. It represents a syndrome better defined as "carbohydrate intolerance." It is expressed by the inability to use certain carbohydrate loads effectively without adverse consequences. Sugar and complex carbohydrates evoke a rise in blood sugar that triggers insulin release from the pancreas. This hormone facilitates storage or utilization of these carbohydrates in various parts of the body. It can also signal the liver to convert the excess to fatty acids transported to fat cells where insulin induces storage as triglycerides, our fuel reserve. In hypoglycemics the insulin control mechanism is faulty. This creates a system-wide disturbance that results in one of the endocrine "fatigue" syndromes we call "hypoglycemia." The standard for diagnosis has been the five-hour glucose tolerance test. A certain sugar solution is given; blood samples are drawn and tested at various intervals. Such tests were done in 1994 by Genter and Ipp on a group of young, healthy people who had no symptoms of hypoglycemia*. Samples were taken every ten minutes to measure the timing and amount of various hormones that normally prevent an excessive drop in blood sugar by counteracting insulin. One-half of the test subjects developed acute symptoms of hypoglycemia near the peak epinephrine (adrenaline) release, which coincided with their lowest blood sugars. Each reacted at different glucose levels considered normal. Obviously each person has a personal alarm system, an individual blood sugar level at which the brain perceives danger, and releases adrenaline (epinephrine).
